I can understand someone getting caught up in a passionate debate, making a mistake, then letting it slide. But i am seeing so many one liners by people (boi included) that vest nothing in a debate except a sarcastic or caustic comment, then poofing away like a drive by dig. Its become so common with certain posters that when they actually do post something worthwhile to read, i often skip over it as being as unworthy of my attention as the poster's other comments.

a real shame, actually. some of them are quite intelligent and articulate.

Gosh tazzy, I missed where Lucy suggested I appologize, so sorry for upsetting you. I did catch the error I made in dates, but I don't expect you to acknowledge that, you seem to hone in on anything bad I say and totally ignore any times I agree with you. But just for the record, I am sorry JLF that you claimed Bush signed NAFTA and I said it was Clinton. Wiki was obviously confused. Now back to your post.. It is nice that you understand people getting all caught up in this bullshit. It happens. It also happens that sometimes people don't have the time to read every post in every thread and therefore miss things. Maybe one day I will have the time to put into this forum that you and others do, but until then I will have to settle for coming on when I get the chance. Hopefully by then there will not be so much finger pointing and blaming the other side. Until then, I suggest you follow your own advice and just ignore my posts. Have a great night[8|]

I'm speaking of the gridlock within the government, with both parties maneuvering for advantage and talking points.  It's getting very easy to distort a pol's vote, so that it takes courage to actually do something now.  The pols are more interested in keeping their jobs than in doing them.

But my solution would involve running the government more like private enterprise and emphasizing results rather than throwing money at problems.

Except your solution offers a Utopian view of private enterprise.

Just as there are many politicians more interested in keeping rather than doing their job the same can be said of many corporate executives, including CEO's.

And you know how easy it would be to name examples of the latter.

I never claimed that private enterprise was perfect.  But given a task to achieve, my contention is that private enterprise will do it more effectively than the public sector.

The lower levels in private enterprise are filled with people who are competent, or they lose their jobs.  The lower levels in government are filled with people that cannot be let go.  I'm not claiming that they're total dead weight, but some of them...

I'm not sure whether the C level execs are better or worse than their public service counterparts.

I've known people in all kinds of jobs in private enterprise that were dead weight.

Talk to me after the next time you need to call a company's customer service.

You are going to have people who are dedicated to doing their job to the best of their ability and you are going to have those who will just do as little as possible, regardless of whether it is in the public or private sector.

mnottertail -> RE: Gingrich to GOP Candidates: Make Democrats the Party of Food Stamps (10/9/2010 6:59:50 AM)

The situation is the actual federal government employee numbers are is no larger than 1963 while the budget has tripled, leading to alot of (private enterprise) contractors running government.

Oh, you've heard of a few of them, surely, and the bang up jobs they been doing:

Haliburton.
Blackwater.

What this means is that the private sector is the most expensive and inefficient way to do business,  fucks up constantly, is intrusive in your life, and CAN NOT do a better job than actual federal employees.

This depends entirely on the task. Private enterprise and the public sector have different motivating factors, but it's not a matter of better/worse, but of what you want done and what principles should guide the project at hand.

Where do you get this information? Of course they can be let go. And of course private enterprise has plenty of less than competent personnel--or you'd get superior service wherever you go!

Additionally, as the drive to cut federal government has progressed, state and local governments have ballooned to pick up the slack.

Unfortunately, while OK, arguably we gain local control, we lose economies and scale and large-scale experience, and ultimately pay much more for the same type of services--a factor in the financial crunches felt in every state.

That's also why as your federal taxes fall, your state and local taxes continually rise (and more than the federal cut).

mnottertail -> RE: Gingrich to GOP Candidates: Make Democrats the Party of Food Stamps (10/9/2010 8:08:11 AM)

And as we see, now your bread and butter services, shit at the local level, teachers,  fire, police, and so on are being scaled back, and many services abandoned.

And economies of scale?  Perish the thought, that is good capitalism, and things that would save money thru the chain like government buying of drugs, and single payer, and things like that ...you know, centralized suppliers and buyers, all sorts of capitalistic efficiencies we worship are couched as socialist and bad for us when it comes to our laps.

Teabaggers and neo-cons don't want everyone to be capitalists.

its way cheaper for me to pay for services I actually use outright.

Well I know I'm going to regret asking, but what do you base that claim on?

This depends entirely on the task. Private enterprise and the public sector have different motivating factors, but it's not a matter of better/worse, but of what you want done and what principles should guide the project at hand.

The nearly universal motivation amongst government employees used to be to accept the low pay in exchange for fixed hours, little responsibility, and a good resume builder.

The nearly universal motivation amongst governemnt employees today is to do the minimum necessary to retain their above market pay, extremely safe, fixed hours and low responsibility job.

A gilb sound bite, nothing more.

Much the same could be said of private sector employees. Certainly management groups complain about it enough.

In both cases, it's attitude and perception, not a factual characterization, and especially not for comparison.

It is far more than a sound bite, it is by far the most common experience of anyone who interacts with government at any level.

Are there private sector employees with the same attitude? of course. The differences are that the minimum they need to do to retain their job is higher, their pay is lower for comparable responsibilities, and they dont have nearly the job security.

Ah. So it's more--it's anecdotal.

Same point.

Wrong again. Anecdotal evidence is perfectly valid when it reaches the pervasiveness that the ineptitude of government employees has.

Circular reasoning (begs the question).
