With the US mid term elections coming up, I wondered about the action of voting, in that we are told we must vote to prevent the nutters gaining power, but given what we have already, I am wondering who the nutters actually are.

So, given a hypothetical situation of an election in a considered stable country like some of those in the west, come voting time, what would happen if nobody voted, or indeed the fabled nutters, ( minority parties) were let in, would the inhabitants of that country be better or worse off ?

Perhaps it is the powerful parties, i.e. the ones that normally get in are maintaining the status quo as to how we all live, they speak of change in reply to the voter, but in reality nothing changes, or if it does, it is calculated so as to not upset the whole apple cart. So if the powerful parties  are maintaining the status quo, what hope is there of change, as surely one powerful party will echo another powerful party whence in power, as the desire is not to change the status quo that they have campaigned hard to aquire.

If nothing worthwhile is being offered by a party, one sure fire way of seeking followers is to engage the passions of people, by appealing to erstwhile spoken under the breath, privately thought or uttered in accepting company kind of subjects, like racism and  sectarianism etc. Fire the passions and the followers will be found.

Ok, say in this hypothetical situation despite all the campaigning and money thrown at the event, the voter turn out in favour of the usual winners was low or even non existant and a minority party got in, would the consequential governance be that different, would they be what the doomsayers in the major parties made them out to be, or would the change be more palatable ?

If enough people voted for the non party- the 2 parties would notice and that crowd would be courted.  Until then it is business as usual.

It is hard to see any progress and true democracy with only two parties in power. Both of them got too used to the idea that they are there permanently and are taking it for granted. I'd vote for any independent no matter how much of a nut job he/she is, just so that the main parties start worrying about their future.

Huh? Where did you learn that?

There are more active (vs. reactive) reasons to vote.

One minority party was created, by taking a major one hostage. Would be curious of those who are real Republicans (and not Tea Party leaning Republicans), on the dilema:

A) Vote Tea Party, and watch their party disappear forever. The party of 'Ronald Regan', HE, who is holy and great, forever gone.

B) Vote Democrat, hoping Republicans at the high level, who are just puppets of the corporations they really represent, take notice.

Its rather funny, that the only group of Americans, we dont hear from anymore, are the honest to God, Republicans. Not (as I just said), the Tea Party Leaning, Republicans, but the true & pure Republicans. If they speak out against the Tea Party, they'll be labled as 'traitors'; so they'll just vote Democrat. The 'Enemy of my Enemy, is my Friend' or some weird concept like that....

No, she pretty much laid it out.

Neither Republicans nor Democrats have the balls to do anything that truly needs doing.

We govern by polls, and pay for it dearly.

Being in elected public office shouldn't be a ,..."career."
I'm voting for all "new" people in November.
