I really want to start a members only dungeon in the Omaha, NE area, so really this question is for all of you around that area.

I want to know how many of you out there would join a local permanent dungeon?

For the record I have never seen one that was not members only.

Been there, done that for years, will keep doing it.

I have even sponsored a monthly private dungeon party for a Florida BDSM group.  We had about 220 members in the BDSM society and 50+ would show for the monthly dungeon party.

Dunno.  Depends a lot on the other members.

I live nowhere near Omaha, NE.  In another time zone...but, I wish we had a dungeon nearby.  Never been to one, but online friends have taunted me with the ones they go to in Atlanta, TES, and several other areas I do not want to even try to remember because the green eyed monster will bite me on the arse.

If the membership fee is reasonable, the rules are common sense and the facility is clean and safe, sure! As was previously mentioned, most dungeons other than private ones in private homes ARE open to members only. This is partly for safety, and partly to be legally able to remain open as a business.

I am NOT in that area, though.

We kind of have that anyway.  We built a dungeon.  To be a member you have to come to munch and be someone we feel we can trust.  If we don't like you then you'll never be get an invite.  When we are in our winter location we belong to the nearest dungeon.  Unfortunately it's located 250 miles away which means that weekend trips there only happen 2 times a year.

We've participated in a couple of Members-only dungeons and play groups, and, quite frankly, it really depends on the quality of the group whether or not we continue to participate. There are a couple of groups that we are a part of, even though we don't have as much time to be as active as we would like, and I, for one, will probably continue to be active in those groups. On the other hand, there are a couple of members-only dungeons we've participated in that were so poorly managed and, frankly, so blatantly dangerous and ethically questionable that I would never set foot there again, nor would I ever allow one of our servants to attend with anyone who intended to go there, even if it were FREE!

I'm nowhere near your area, but I would strongly suggest that, if you're serious about this, you contact some of the groups in other areas who have done this successfully and see what they've done -right-, and to get a "heads-up" on some of the potential problem areas (every dungeon/playspace -- especially those that are open to multiple members-- has some!) to help you get off on the right foot.

Maybe. It would depend on who is running it, what their requirements are for belonging, how picky they are going to be about letting people in (because I am VERY picky), what they will require of me (time, money, etc).

My free time is very valuable to me. I've never felt the 'need' to belong to any group or get involved in group activities. Because of that, there has to be the perfect combination of people, atmosphere, fun fun funnnnnnnnn, to sway me to join in. Otherwise I just go make my own fun elsewhere.

Someone wrote me on the other side and insists that females can get into any dungeon they wish without a membership, which even from my limited experience is bollocks. I've read of swingers clubs that will let them skate but I not dungeons. Is the local dungeon here just an anomaly in that it requires everyone to have a membership?

NuevaVida -> RE: If there was a members only dungeon in your area would you join? (10/10/2010 7:31:26 AM)

There was one and I didn't join.  It was run by a good friend of mine.  Daddy & I just aren't into public playing, so we didn't go.

WinsomeDefiance -> RE: If there was a members only dungeon in your area would you join? (10/10/2010 7:37:29 AM)

Yes, I'd probably join. Whether or not I attended more than once, and remained a member, would depend on a few things.

The last public party I attended, anyone of legal age who wanted to attend was allowed in so long as they had the money in hand. I admit that I had a few concerns about this. I much prefer a members only (or registered participant only) event, with guests attending only when brought by a member sort of environment. I was honestly surprised to attend a public play space that appeared to be ran with so few precautions taken. No posted rules, no medical trained staff, no membership rules etc. I had fun socializing, but I didn't play. Too many red flags in my mind for me to feel comfortable doing so in that environment.

littlewonder -> RE: If there was a members only dungeon in your area would you join? (10/10/2010 7:49:56 AM)

Been there done that even ran one from my home with the ex. From my experience it doesn't last for long because of drama. It just seems like when a bunch of bdsm people get together then mob mentality happens. Personalities clash, subs and doms start the "I'm a better dom/sub/slave than you" attitude, arguments erupt, people start cheating on each other, etc....

Yeah, no desire to ever do that again. Master and I will visit the Crucible from time to time but that's about as far as it goes.

To My knowledge, you are correct.  I've been to several across the country (public dungeons) and I've yet to see one that didn't require membership.  (Even if it's just a one time membership.)  I haven't entered one yet that didn't require picture ID, verification of age, and emergency contact info at minimum.  The same info is taken for any multiple day event that I've attended that has a dungeon on the premises, such as Thunder in the Mountains.  Any private dungeon (like one run out of somebody's home) can be a different matter.  Still, most of those are open to just members of the local munch group and surrounding groups.

OP, I'm not in Omaha, but your question is somewhat misleading.  The public dungeons that I've attended have all been "members only", but all that really involves is walking in the door, filling out the paperwork, paying the fee, and bingo, you're a "member".

The couple that I've been at have been a little more extensive in the vetting process -- Attend a "meet and greet" and get introduced to the owners and DMs, talk a bit, attend one "safety session" and at least two events--one where you only get to watch and one where you can play in a 'supervised' setting (as a probationary member), and then get voted on by the owners and DM (and the membership at one of the members-only groups), and THEN you get to be a member (one club had a 6-month post-membership "review process" where you could have your membership rescinded if your participation in the community caused "undue stress or hardship" to the other members--I actually really liked that group, and the drama level was tolerable).

I don't think I'd be comfortable joining a "members only" club where the ONLY requirement for membership was coming in the door and plunking down a couple of dollar "membership fee". But that's just me.

Well I'd have to have confidence in the people who were in charge for one thing. Starting up a dungeon is not an inexpensive undertaking. you have equipment cost that will run thousands of dollars, security personnel, medical staff, liability insurance, You have to consider all the city laws, zoning ordinances, business licenses, assuming you could even get one. dealing with the local cops who will come visit you. I wish you luck

If you're talking about dungeons that are affiliated with munch groups, you are absolutely correct.  Most folks who have a play space in their home (which they allow the munch group to use) are a lot more selective of who they allow to attend.  I don't blame anyone a bit for that.  Many groups have some kind of vetting process.

There are some public dungeons that will ask that a person attend an orientation before they can become a member.  I haven't had to do that.  A membership card from another dungeon is often good enough to allow you to skip that.  I haven't walked into a public club yet that hasn't allowed Me to play.

Toppingfrmbottom -> RE: If there was a members only dungeon in your area would you join? (10/10/2010 12:19:41 PM)

I have to go with it depends on the group. There's some people who I feel are petty and vindictive, and at worse,  they are gossips, who're incapable of being professional.

I wouldn't go to their club, and I wouldn't get near them willingly unless you paid me good money to do so.

If the group's a good group, then hell yes I'd go to a members only groups , and regularly did so in the past when I played more.

whiteslavebitch -> RE: If there was a members only dungeon in your area would you join? (10/10/2010 3:50:24 PM)

I used to live in Washington State, there was a members only club/dungeon that I never did join. If I were un-owned, i might be inclined to join one.

I was a member of Edges. I guess I still am. Whatever happened to it. If you know, let me know.
