I'm thinking of getting doggie doors put into two of our house hold doors. Ginger, as far as I know, has never used one. I am wondering how easy it'd be to get her to use one and realize she knows how.

I'm thinking just showing her the door moves, and she can step through it, or offering her a treat and guiding her with the treat through the door, a couple of times,  should work.

But have any of you ever experienced a dog who just would not use a doggie door?

I once worked with a dog who was terrified of stairs.  I took her to the top of the stairs and cuddled her and talked gently to her.  Then, still talking to her, I put a paw on the first step.  I was holding her loosely enough that she could have gotten free if she had wanted.  I kept going over that the next few days until she felt comfortable.

I have a friend who put doggie doors in for her dog. 8 years later, the dog still wont use the damn thing. Ya win some, ya lose some.

We had a cat and a dog that were afraid of the door. I looked at it like they saw it as a wall and they already knew they couldn't walk through walls. With one we were able to remove the door part and then we played with her through the door. If she wanted to get to us, with our little toy and treat, she had to come through it. She loved tape measures and that would do the trick for anything we wanted her to do.

With the other we put the food outside the door, kept showing her where it was and wouldn't let her eat until she went through the door. Of course she gave in before that could be a problem. I wouldn't be that cruel. (It took a few hours.)

Once they saw that they wouldn't get hurt, and we did try to make it entertaining, they were fine. You just have to let them know it is a must to get what they want.

I had a huge dog that was afraid of water. It was extremely hot that summer and she was suffering. I couldn't get a mister I wanted so I got a kids pool and filled it up. She wouldn't get in for anything until I put a piece of meat right in the middle of the pool. The only way she could have that meat... and I did tease her with the meat... was that she had to go in. She finally rushed in and grabbed it. I kept doing it. She ended up loving water except for in the bath tub... and became quite the swimmer. She just didn't realize how big that lake was and she couldn't make it to the other side. Once that was learned... she was all good! lol

My cockerspaniel when he was alive had absolutely no problem with doggie doors, despite the fact we've never had one, nor did we teach him to use one. We were at my aunts, and her dog had a doggie door, and he's like well if she can use it so can I, and actually came in when he wasn't allowed too lol.
