As a Historical Re-anactor one of the objectives is to inform the public of what it was really like living back in the time period being presented. There are many historical misconceptions. My Ren Group is the Spainish Army in Flanders during the late 1500s, what is now Belgium. Many people are surprised at what we have in our encampment, and we have won awards for our encampments representation of that time period. Being in California however, I found that the Latin Community looks on the Spainish as Conquerors. I am not going to deny atrociteies that occured in the Second World War, in fact if you really exam wars you can find many acts that we would view as crimes and atrocites. But if one looks at history objectivily what really happen is not what one thinks actually happen. Since there is the issue of the Waffen SS let me point out a few facts. At the start of World War 2 there were only 3 SS Divions, 2nd SS Panzer, 5th Mountain Division, and a horse cavlary Divion 8th SS Cavlary Florian Geyer yet at the end of the war there were some 38 SS Division, where did they come from. Many of these units were made up of volunteer from other countries, such as France, Croatain, Russian, Hungarian etc. The 5th SS Panzer Division, Wiking had Scandinavians in their ranks. It is documented that the largest National ethnic group in the Waffen SS were the Dutch. Most joined the Waffen SS not so much as believing Nazi idelogy but to fight the Russian who they view as a threat. The 2nd SS Panzer Division was deployed on almost every front, it was used as the Spearhead of German offensives, it was first in and last, it had the highest number of Oak Leaf Iron Crosses, Germany equal to the Congressional Medal of Honor. The Waffen SS considered themselves apart from what is known as the Black Shirt SS, near the end of the war they become very vocal when Himmler wanted all SS Units regardless of their duties to wear the field grey uniforms of the Army the Waffen SS consider this insulting.
