Joking aside, the biological mechanism is actually related to the effectiveness of drugs. The drug in question is, of course, the miracle of the bondage world (drumroll please....) ENDORPHINES! Yes, you can build up a tolerance to your own endorphines. Yes, they are addictive, and you can actually become disfunctional in your search after newer and better endorphine highs. This is especially true if you are getting a "pain fix" on a regular basis (lucky creature). The good news is that the addiction is psychological, rather than physiological. You can reset your pain tolerance by holding off on getting a pain fix for a while. The longer you go without, the lower your tolerance becomes, and the faster you get off when the blessed event finally happens. Isn't biochemistry grand?
