ORIGINAL: erebus Be careful. I know a woman who enjoyed bloodletting. She became dangerously anemic; so much so he had to be hospitalized and on IV iron. Small women, especially, are vulnerable. Holds no interest for me. Blood draws for medical tests is about as far as I'd go. It takes a lot of blood for this to happen, though. It -is- important to keep track of blood loss, though -- especially when getting started with actual "blood-letting" play (not so much with piercing play, since there isn't as much blood loss). If one is actually -drawing- blood, then the normal parameters for medical professionals in this area is no more than 2.5%-5% of total blood volume (TBV) every 5 days (which is based on body weight). You can probably find charts online to give you the information on quantities based on your particular weight. If you are dealing with a menstruating woman, I err on the side of caution and stick to the 2.5%x5 rule... for males and non-menstruating women, I may, occasionally get up to that 5% level, but certainly, recreationally, not more than once every couple of months (large body piercings of more than 20% of the body or large-gauge piercings/suspensions included) -- remember that this total also has to include some leeway for necessary medical testing in the event that the person one is with has medical issues, and that general health and well-being ALSO play a profound role in the process. A -healthy-, menstruating female with no health issues may be able to handle a relatively frequent 2.5% TBV session a couple of times a week... but if the person has health issues, once a -month- or less may be a more realistic choice.
