Allow me to give an example which took place only a matter of an hour ago.
I received a very polite mail from a girl in the USA, I replied, and she then asked to talk on yahoo messenger. I took her address there and sent a YM, in her second sentence she told me she was expecting an inheritance of some US$120000 and had traveled to Malaysia to collect it and wished to give it to me if I became her Master! I told her she'd be better off keeping it, her reply was 'could I lend her US $2000 to pay her hotel bill as she waits for the lawyers to finalize her payment.
I don't think I am being overly judgmental when I call this member a fake.

Yes. We know the scammers exist. They will exist on any internet meeting place, and they are there because they make money from it. The type in your example is the most obvious to spot, what's wrong with deleting the email and not giving it a second thought? I love those kinds of emails...I can toss them out in a tenth of a second and it is effortless on my part.

So what is your point on the scammer emails? That they are clogging your inbox? Throw them out. That 'real' women aren't throwing themselves at you like the scammers are? Go find some women who interest you and present yourself in a way that is appealing and see if you can't get a dialogue going. I can't see that one site is any more unattractive than others because of the fluctuating volume of obvious scammer mail - all sites will have it, especially the free ones. Saying that one site has too much is kind of silly, it's everywhere...get used to it. That may sound rude but there really, honestly, isn't anything to be done. If there is, then patent your idea/invention and go forth to make millions. Until that happens accept the fact that you have to be wary and watch out for yourself from others trying to make a buck off you.

Do you watch commercials? Do you believe everything they say? Everywhere in life we are being presented with ways to part us from our money because other people want it. Most of us learn to be careful and know that things are not as good as they look on the outside no matter what others tell us or we learn the hard way and give up our money for something that doesn't turn out to be what was promised. It's called life.

Say you were responsible for running this site...what can you really do about scammers? I've seen things suggested in other threads of this nature and nothing really stands out as a solution that is fair to everyone and doable.

The other posters who mentioned that this has been discussed to death weren't lying. If its a subject you feel passionate about then I'd suggest you read other threads about it.

Does anybody else think it's kind of ironic that someone who has posted a main profile pic that is not of himself is complaining about fakes?

Dude, you supposedly left Alt, which is a paid membership site because there were fake profiles there.  Now, you come to CM, which is a free membership site, and expect them not to have the same problem.  Exactly how does that make sense in your mind?

Shhhhhhhhhhhh...who knows the vagaries of the human mind well enough to explain this? [8D]

You're HOW old and been online for HOW long?? And you're STILL complaining about fakes and such???

Wow...truly amazing.

No, you cannot blacklist people. I think there's a line somewhere telling people not to send money to others.

However some one could talk to you, decide you aren't good enough and list you as a person to be wary of. Would you like that? No way to redeem yourself or prove yourself innocent? Because there isn't any way to vet people, blacklisting is prohibited.

However, the profile of the person trying to scam 2K off of you, hit the report profile button. Better than blacklisting, it gets the profile removed.

Strictly speaking, there is. It's called monitoring of all on-site comms. And I wouldn't like that, as I suspect many others wouldn't.

Not to mention that, for a site of this size, the costs would run into ... well lots. Lots and lots. Heaps, in fact. Does the OP fancy paying that much? I doubt it.

A star chamber is not what's required.

My take on this would be to follow Chopper's advice, and harden the fuck up [1]

Hi steven, I do understand its a bit of a mine field, and no one wishes to bad mouth other members per-se, and I am sure there are those who get offers turned down would relish making false claims against those who turn their advances down, but the whole fake scenario is what ruined alt.com, which had of course always had its fair share of fakes and liars but this problem really has gotten out of hand there now, hence my closing my account with them.

balletmaster, I used to belong to alt.  IMO, what killed the site was greed.  The site owners got greedy and kept trying to find ways to squeeze money out of its members and lost sight of the fact that they needed to provide a good environment for those members, o they would leave.  I left when it got harder to meet good people there.  Last I heard, alt instituted a policy where, if you did not get laid in three months, your membership would get extended free.  So the natural result was a lot of HNGs, and the women left in droves.  So the fakes invaded the site - no female competition, and lots of HNGs to fleece.

Clicky the linky, OP. Blacklisting is a violation of TOS and the forum rules.

As to scammers, the easiest way to avoid them is to set your search parameters for ages 27 and over. If you do peruse the eighteen, nineteens and early twentysomethings, the profile is usually a dead giveaway.
On the receiving side, it is very rare for a drop dead gorgeous twentysomething female to send cmail to a fortysomething male, particularly when the only picture on his profile not only isn't of him, it's some other girl. If she's 20+ years younger than you and the pics look like professional model shots, chances are about 251463/ 1 that it's a scammer. Report, block, and move on.

What Sexyred said. I get bizarre offers every week. It's the nature of the internet. Delete and move on.

Want another one? *wiggles eyebrows*

I agree with you AngelikaJ and this is why it would be such an awkward dilemma. But I had noticed certain members having "THIS MEMBER IS A FAKE" printed at the top of their profile. I doubt very much this had not been added by the member itself, so I presumed it had been put on by site managers. It's not a case of whining but this site does seem to be pretty genuine all in all, and it would be a real shame to see it become what alt seems to have become, a retreat for Ghanian/Nigerian fraudsters

Please click the report button when you see those profiles, those words are not put there by site managers, they are put there by a user who has decided to break TOS and try to blacklist another member for whatever reason.

So if you met and had a real life relationship that ended bitterly, the site could decide who was at fault and therefore who was twue and who wasn't? I don't think so. If it was that easy, family court judges would have an easier time of it.

Maybe the girl whose picture the op posts could claim he's a fake, by displaying her photo without her permission. At the very least, he's rude as can be by so doing. Can we report him for that?

As I said (and you seem to be agreeing with me, albeit via the back door), it's all unenforceable without massive and costly monitoring, which I wouldn't like, nor would most folks, therefore it's best we don't bother trying.

The way things are works just fine, unless someone is sensitive to the point of idiocy.

tiggerspoohbear -> RE: A comedy or errors (10/22/2010 10:11:28 AM)

Comedy of errors?  How about comedy of morons?  If there weren't still people on the internet, and real life, who didn't fall for the scams, they'd go away.  As has already been mentionned.

Suck it up buttercup, read what is considered scammer, then report it if it fits any of the criteria.  You're the 985,789 to go on about it.  We see it at least 2 or 3 times a week from someone who doesn't know about the search feature.  Located top right hand corner of this page.  Use it to your advantage.

Frankly, I'm sick and tired of hearing about the "fakes" liars" and assorted asstards, myriad dingledouches and various dumbasses that people who are over the age of consent should have the common sense to stay away from.  If you couldn't handle a site where you paid money, how are you going to do on a site that's free?  It's the internet, haven't you learned that yet?
