And that is what I find most curious....I will buy the new Vince Flyn book as soon as I finish what I am currently reading....and the ideology espoused by that character is diametrically opposed to my own.....yet I eat that shit up.
I see nothing wrong with Rapp shooting the terrorist in the knee to ascertain where the next bomb has been placed.....I actually enjoy his John Wayne like sureness in the rightness of what he does.
But that is fiction...and it is neat and tidy in that Rapp never has the wrong guy strapped to a chair...and there is never enough time to employ other more Constitutionally approved methods of getting the informmation.That and the fact that the characters motives are allways so red blooded American true .....justified as he is by personal loss and the desire for truth justice and the American way.
Claptrap...yep,but hugely entertaining.

The only time I pay attention to the author is when I've read something by them already.  Then I am either looking for another book by them or disliked their writing enough to avoid any more of their books.

A character that could never(by a sane person) be confused as a "hero"....the term there would most definitely be "anti-hero".Now if the anti-hero's politics offended me that would just reinforce my predisposition to dislike him,after all he is an anti-hero....so there is no confusion or dichotomy there.

That seems to have been completely missed by a lot of the critical discussion about American Psycho when the book was first published though. Most of the reviewers had even missed that he wasn't what you'd call a reliable narrator and probably wasn't doing any of the sex and violence. There were women's groups complaining about the violence towards women, gay groups complaining about the violence towards homosexuals, all sorts of stuff that seemed to be taking it for granted that Bateman was supposed to be a sympathetic hero figure.
Small wonder the film made it a lot more clear that he had a sort of Walter Mitty thing going on...

I don't care about ideology when I read fiction, I read fiction for ENTERTAINMENT, and then if I see something referenced that appears interesting, I research it for my self. 

If I want ideology there are plenty of non-fiction books to choose from, including stuff by Bill O' the clown, and Beck the fucking maniac.

I wouldn't read those guys with a gun to my head......okay,I lied,if you held a gun to my head I would in fact read them.....but I would take a long hot shower afterwards,and drink a large bottle of Jacks.

Holy shit I never said I've completely (scanned their ridiculous shit in store) read either of them, I was just using them as two of the more egregious examples of partisan ideology I COULD, read.

I've read stuff by William F Buckley, and Goldwater, as well as David Brock, and John W Dean, and Molly Ivins, and Al Franken and Joe Conanson.  I try to balance my reading, but I will never read fools like Hannity, or Bill O' the clown or Mann Coulter, or Beck the insane.  Hell I'll even read Monica Crowley's web-site, now and then, just not the outright insane.

I wouldn't want to draw any conclusions here...but I do find it curious that none of our more vocal right wing posters have stopped by...perhaps they do not cross lines,in that they won't read any "liberal" trash,perhaps they have decided not to read my liberal trash....lol.

I wouldn't be at all surprised. The Republican party probably has approved reading lists and viewing lists as well as all of the other ideology check stuff they're big on.
Still, it's something to remember for the next time limpwrist or Sanity start blathering about partisan lefties, isn't it?

(Another possibility, of course, is that ideology in fiction is far more conspicuous when you don't agree with it, and there's not much of a leftist agenda in most America pop culture outside of the occasional Joss Whedon telly series or Spielberg film. Just look at print SF - for every left leaning European writer like Iain M Banks there's a few dozen libertarian nutcases like David Drake, Jerry Pournelle or Robert Adams.)
