PatrickG38 -> Ignorance as Public Health Problem (10/22/2010 10:58:36 AM)

A powerfully depressing article from the New York Times illustrates that perhaps the nation should begin treating ignorance, not as an individual moral failing, but a public health problem that threatens the fabric of our fragile polity. The article http://www.nytimes.com/2010/10/21/us/politics/21climate.html?hp discusses the widespread skepticism as to the existence and cause of climate change in the Tea Party. There are a plethora of examples in the article of people pontificating on a subject they are woefully unprepared to understand and asserting the most strange of conspiracy theories about one world government. Nevertheless, it is the beautiful ignorance of the last opinion offered in the article,

Lisa Deaton, a small-business owner in Columbus, Ind., who started We the People Indiana, a Tea Party affiliate, is supporting Mr. Young in part because of his stand against climate change legislation. “They’re trying to use global warming against the people,” Ms. Deaton said. “It takes away our liberty.” “Being a strong Christian,” she added, “I cannot help but believe the Lord placed a lot of minerals in our country and it’s not there to destroy us.”
that best illustrates the extent of our ignorance pandemic. One wants to shake Ms. Deaton and ask her who the fuck placed the forbidden fruit in the Garden of Eden. If you take your religion so seriously, you probably should be aware of its major teaching concerning the origin of evil in the world. The god of Genesis has no reservation about placing items around us that would be very dangerous to use. Moreover, from a purely practical matter, many of the minerals in our earth are exceedingly poisonous.

Perhaps a citizenry this ignorant deserves people like Sarah Palin, Sharron Angle and Christine O’Donnell, but there is another option. Treat ignorance the same with the same urgency we treated smallpox. Treat it as the pandemic it is.
Obviously, this is written to be over the top, I am not recommending the quarantining of the ignorant (hmmmm….interesting), but merely pointing out the danger of our culture of anti-intellectualism.

Yeah Firm, it makes far more sense to belong to the Church of Limbaugh.

From the link:

“Climate change is real, and man is causing it,” Mr. Hill said, echoing most climate scientists. “That is indisputable. And we have to do something about it.”

A rain of boos showered Mr. Hill, including a hearty growl from Norman Dennison, a 50-year-old electrician and founder of the Corydon Tea Party.

“It’s a flat-out lie,” Mr. Dennison said in an interview after the debate, adding that he had based his view on the preaching of Rush Limbaugh and the teaching of Scripture. “I read my Bible,” Mr. Dennison said. “He made this earth for us to utilize.”

And even when the vostok ice core studies prove them wrong they just keep going moving on to *another* subject with the hope that someone will "salute" it.
In a parade I'd put the "Global Warmers" ("Climate Change") ("Geo Thermal") or whatever they're calling themselves these days (behind) the "U.F.O. People".
They could carry one of those big banners; "Yeah we were lying but we wearn't "really" lying!"
It's funny, I have no doubt that a president like Obama (would) support this nonsense.
You can tell that that "movement" is sociopathic because even when caught in a bold face lie they deny that they lied!
Nice.

Lucylastic -> RE: Ignorance as Public Health Problem (10/22/2010 12:29:14 PM)

edited to add... dammit he has me on ignore cos he got caught  in a bare face lie

Lucy is pretty much correct.

Welcome to the boards.  Apologies for being snarky right out of the bat.

I'll attempt to be less so for the nonce.

Ignorance is definitely a problem, there's no escaping it. You need people to be a bit stupid because it's easier to exploit them then and make a shed-load of money, but if they get too dumb, then they're not much good for anything. But blaming the Church for ignorance is a mistake.

Ignorance is the result of society putting other priorities above ensuring everyone gets the opportunity to have a good education and a good upbringing. It can be fixed, but it probably won't be.

Careful Pops...you are steadily heading towards the terminus of "crackpotville" and "irrelevant way".

Fair enough. Snarky next round. The post was actually meant to draw attention to the amazing things people say about religion and minerals.

Mike, of course I expect the left to believe in this stuff, if you want to "believe" in that stuff go right ahead! Noone's stopping you.
I choose not to, but, I don't believe in the Easter Bunny either.
I've argued this in another site for *months* and it was the same thing, if a scientific study disproved their point, just move on to another or just try another circuitous argument. There are simply too many $financial$ motives involved (for some people) to have an arbitrary disscussion on it.
Al Gore himself could come out and say he made a misstake and there is no global warming and some people would still argue for it!
Ever try to argue with those "9-11 Conspiracy Theorists?" It's the exact same thing with the "Global Warming" people and the U.F.O. people! They argue endlessly about nothing. Ever notice that most of the people who "see" U.F.O.s are people who "believe in" U.F.O.s?
That'll be the next high profile firing in some leftist org, "he didn't believe in "Global Warming" so we fired him!"

As another data point of ignorance as public health hazard I'd like to point out that the 10th infant just died from Whooping Cough in California this year. part of a widespread outbreak of the disease. Whooping Cough has a safe and effective vaccine but the ignorant fools who have bought into the lies of the anti vax crowd have led us into a resurgence of a scourge that should be all but eliminated in this country.

Anti-vaccine, anti climate change, anti-evolution, beleif in UFO's.  It is all part of the same ignorance.  It exists a bit on the left as well as best exemplified in the anti-vaccine people, but it is an cultural problem on the right as it commands a large part of a major political party.

Its a crying shame, honestly, that any child should have to suffer with this disease all because of their parents ignorance.

"If you've ever seen a child with pertussis, you won't forget it" -- that's how the American Academy of Pediatrics explains what whooping cough is on its website. The academy says a child with the disease coughs so hard and so often "until the air is gone from his/her lungs and he/she is forced to inhale with the loud 'whooping' sound that gives the disease its nickname."
