Toppingfrmbottom -> How come on your own it's so hard to get admited to a mental health hospital* no not about me* (10/22/2010 8:04:08 PM)

This one guy that set the mall on fire, he had a long history of mental health problems, and of trying to get admited to a pych hospital, but the pych hospitals wouldn't admit him, and I do know it's very hard to get admited on your own with out a dr putting you in for a 72 hour hold and evaluation.

I can't help but feeling, that if perhaps he could of got the help he needed he wouldn't have set the mall on fire.

I dunno. Here in PA it's rather easy to be admitted to a psych ward. All you have to do is walk into an ER and state you are suicidal. They'll hand you a paper, you sign it and wait until they have a bed for you.

Unfortunately I know quite a few people who have gone this route.

It is called a 302.    I had a buddy who liked to ...put his antagonists in for observation.

Here in Sacramento it's called a 5150.

I heard that towns just put these people on greyhound buses - to send them to somewhere else. back and forth they go.

Is the standard still "danger to self and/or others"?  If so, perhaps he used the wrong words.

Yes, if you tell the dr you're a danger to yourself and every one around you, then I  do believe they're more likely to take you in or do something with you.

I think the best answer to this question I have ever seen is to be found here...

quote:

There was only one catch and that was Catch-22, which specified that a concern for one's own safety in the face of dangers that were real and immediate was the process of a rational mind. Orr was crazy and could be grounded. All he had to do was ask; and as soon as he did, he would no longer be crazy and would have to fly more missions. Orr would be crazy to fly more missions and sane if he didn't, but if he was sane he had to fly them. If he flew them he was crazy and didn't have to; but if he didn't want to he was sane and had to.

Yossarian was moved very deeply by the absolute simplicity of this clause of Catch-22 and let out a respectful whistle.
"That's some catch, that catch-22," he observed.
"It's the best there is," Doc Daneeka agreed.

Catch-22 Joseph Heller

Catch 22 is that only the well ask for help. It's madness.

Are you saying catch 22 implies that if you're asking for mental help for your illnesses you're not mentally ill enough to then need said help?

It's not hard to get admitted. It's hard to find a bed. It's hard to find a funding source (cash or insurance) that will pay for a voluntary admittance, particularly if that admittance is not medically necessary. Not medically necessary means that the person can be served just as well by outpatient care. If they are so bad off that they need inpatient care, usually that means they are a 5150, hence not "admitted on your own".

There are times I've spent hours on the phone trying to find an inpatient psych bed in California for a teenager or a woman. Men's beds are slightly easier to find.

This is what happens when the state hospitals are closed by the ACLU or like groups.
Many homeless are mentally ill and should be in hospitals if only to give them a warm bed and three meals a day to keep them out of danger but the lib groups feel their "freedon" is more important.
Some of those even the shelters aren't equipped to handle.
I donate to four shelters and they are all, "at capacity."

Yes. My experience in the UK is that someone who needs an admission won't get it until they stop asking for help.

I worked in group homes that were MR/MH.

I agree with you.

We need all versions.... one size does not fit all.

True,  All though I do know  someone I loved dearly was  suicidal  and was thinking it was getting bad enough that they may have had to go in for a stay so they couldn't harm themselves.  instead of being put there because someone ordered you to be there.  Though thankfully they never did get to that point.
