Seriously ... the company I was a manager for employed him as his CV was packed with “PC engineering experience”. In everyday use, however, he seemed to be more a master of what is termed “percussive maintenance” – he’d just hit the crap out of whatever was put in front of him, swearing copiously, until it either a) worked or b) died properly and permanently. Eventually, after attempts at training courses and suchlike, I decided his career path would be better served by him leaving our employ in order to pursue opportunities elsewhere.
I’m also reminded of my late granny’s phrase, when dealing with TVs that were on the blink ... she’d say (in her granny voice) “if in doubt, give it a clout” ... then BAM! A good, solid whack to the top of the TV, sometimes with a rolled-up brolly.
The amazing thing is, it used to work most of the time.
You miss all this with modern, solid-state devices [:D]
