Toppingfrmbottom -> Detergents specially meant for delicates like panties and bras. (10/24/2010 8:43:35 PM)

So, I have heard from women  that say you should wash your bra's and panties and things with elastic in a detergent like  say forevernu, or detergents specially made for delicates like bra's and panties, because regular detergent is to harsh and damaging on delicate, and stuff with elastics,  and that stuff like forevernu, extend the life of your garment and are super gentle on them, so I was wondering, if that's true, then would it be just as good and gentle and  beneficial and not wearing out ish so much on everything else, like bed sheets and other clothing?

Everything I have gets washed in All Free and Clear.  I don't use anything special.

Other than marketing ploys, then how come they tell you your delicates need a wash for delicates ?

Is it even true that your average  detergents can be harsh on everyday clothing?

I used to turn  my jeans inside out to wash them.

The key to keeping the elastics intact in your fine lingerie is not to DRY them in a dryer...it's heat that breaks down the elastic, not necessarily the detergent...I use Purex and cold water.....for EVERYTHING!  There isn't any visible difference to me in using hot vs cold water for laundry.  Unless you want to count the electric bill!

Again, specialty companies are preying on a woman's gullibility/belief that we need special things for everything.......when we DON'T!  Don't believe me?  Go look at the price of a tube of hair remover, then wander over to the men's department and look at a tube of hair remover.......they pay half the cost of what we pay for just the name and the pretty pink containers.....the marketing bastards must be men!  It happens in clothing, personal care products....all sorts of different things.

Some of the mens underwear tho are frilly.

No, I believe you. It's like womens tennis shoes are 60 and mens tennis shoes are 25, depending on the shoe. They cost women much, much more for 90 percent of the stuff. Womens jeans at the plus size shop was 80 to 100 dollars, I said fuck that, went over to the big and tall male, and got 4 sets of jeans, buy one get one for the same cost they wanted for one.

We pay a lot for brand names.
The active ingredient in Mucinex is the same exact ingredient that is in generic 'Robitussin' expectorant.

I can do math.
I don't buy Mucinex; I buy the cheap liquid stuff and do the math.

The special new Crest for gums has the exact same ingredients in the same order as one of the other Crests at almost half the price.

It is true woman are expected to pay  more.

However the "value enhanced"  retail- has spread- it is everywhere-  anytime there is a package BEWARE.   I have lived my life- on a low income.  Yet- I live pretty well.   This because I read labels, and I use the net.

"they"  make very little money on me.

heheh snappy, I don't think any of those suggestions would work to well, at least not the concrete pond, specially not if it was a duck or fish pond [:'(]

Elastic and spandex will deteriorate if washed with strong oxidizers such as chlorine bleach or peroxide bleach. It makes the bendy fibers brittle and they wear out faster.

The enemy of fabrics can also be residue left on the fabric and that is often a function of the water chemistry and not the detergent choice, per se. If you have high carbonate levels in the water, and many many places do, there will be carbonates left in the fabric. This is why whites go yellow and colors dingy with washings and not just the dye slowly washing out. The classic thing to do is add borax (Yes, the 20 mule team stuff) to the wash. BTW... woolite, the wash for delicates, is just a non ionic detergent with borax and a bit of peroxides. Borax keeps the carbonates in solution so they rinse out instead of getting stuck in the clothing fibers.

BTW, I learned this keeping my undress white Navy uniforms up to inspection standards. It is even proceduralized in the Navsea 3000 manual, "Cleaning Standards for Forces Afloat"

Oh, yeah, another useful item from the 300 manual is the best cleaner for stainless steel kitchen stuff ever... half isopropyl alchohol, half distilled water (tap water leaves a film), then one cup per five gallons of surfectant. For home use, rubbing alchohol, distilled water, and a quarter teaspoon of Jet Dry (for the dishwasher) put in a quart spray bottle. This stuff is also great for detailing the chrome on your ride.

Maybe I should write a column, "Heloise Hints for HNGs"

Finding practical uses for all that chemistry training,
Stefan
