I've never heard of that, personally, but I wouldn't rule it out.

Low vitamin D levels can cause IBS in some people.
Is that perhaps what her docter said?
Did he call her in a prescriprion for vitamin D?

Vitamin D difficiency (which would result from her not taking any in if her doctor told her she was "intolerant") would result in all sorts of health issues, some quite serious.

I think it is the way you phrased your post, PA.

Intolerant means something entirely different from difficient.

I am pretty sure vitamin D intolerance would either be impossible or very, very rare.

Vitamin D difficiency is quite common.

According to the article, women who have IBS can become deficient in Vitamin D due to their lack of absorption by the intestines. Maybe that's what her doctor meant.

Getting a few minutes of sunshine every day and taking a supplement can work wonders for just about everyone.

So, she was difficient, took vitamin D supplements and now has IBS symptoms?

And her doctor drew the corrolation.

Thank you for patiently explaining it to me, PA.

Maybe she could see if she switches to a different type/brand or a different delivery (a smaller dose every day if she was taking a big one once a week) it might help.

IBS can be very uncomfortable, but it is better than low D levels even if she might not think so at the moment.

She sounds very tired... so I am trying to figure this out for her.  I dont want to call her-  now -  but said I would tomorrow.   She sounds terrible.   I gather the D makes the IBS worse.... tho I do not recall her having IBS.

And angelikaJ, thank YOU, (as well as all on this thread) for trying to help.   My neighbor is like a 2nd mom to me!     We hang out and help eachother we went to my church yesterday AM, and her church in the PM.  It was a special day for us.   And we often have lunch, visit, coffee.  She is 77, I am 47.

The human body will generate it's own vitamin D with exposure to sunlight on the skin. It can also be obtained artificially with UVB rays from a light source capable of producing it (UVB).

Yeah.   She is on a bunch of meds- says she can not be in sunlight but she drives every day. She does not sit home.   I told her that driving- she would get some sunlight.

Over the last several years it has been discovered that many women (and men) are difficient in vitamin D. Above a certain lattitude, many of us don't get enough sun exposure in the winter months. Furthermore, if you are overweight, your fat cell grab the free vitamin D and it is not available to our bodies.

Much more has been discovered about the roles of vitamin D in the roles of immune function, cancer prevention, blood sugar control, as well as the prevention of seasonal affective disorder in the winter among other things.

I know she is on a water pill.  She is slightly overweight... very slight.

You've got it backwards. Vitamin D helps IBS.
PA, she's elderly. She goes to the doctor and she doesn't write things down. She gets confused. Suggest she takes a recorder with her so she can listen to it later or brings a family member or friend with her who can remember and make notes.

Many of the vitamin D tablets are made from milk solids. Now there are plenty of things that can give you IBS with milk products such as having had the gall bladder removed. (common side effect but not universal)

If she needs vitamin D and can't take the tablets, go to the tanning salon or buy a true sunlamp and go tanning. A good thing for weather induced depression such as is common in Washington and Oregon too.

Sunlight through glass will not give you the benefits of unfiltered sun.
