Let's face it, all the polticians are the same as far as the basics of tax and spend. Tax and spend is the single most dangerous way our politicians are doing business as usual. No matter what party, or level of government, show the politicians that we are not going to support it anymore. If a candidate is not supportive of a balanced budget, and laws that enforce it, then don't vote for them. If there is no clear choice, vote against the incumbant and send a letter to them and who you voted for explaining why you voted the way you did. In the long term, no good can come from Tax and spend, regardless of where the money goes. We all saw what happened with the mortgage industry with all the invisible paper floating around, just wait till it catches up with us on a govermental level.

Find unity in a single idea, and move forward if you really want change.

What's wrong with Tax and Spend? As long as it isn't excessive, it isn't a problem.

Big Government is nowhere near the size of the threat as Big Money is.

A spendaholic government that put $15 trillion on China's credit card is nowhere near the danger that a Wall St using an unregulated instrument to gamble $700 trillion represents. Its not even in the same time zone.

When do we "Find unity in a single idea, and move forward" on the Wall St issue? Those who create the most election rhetoric on the government issue are pretty silent on the bigger Wall St. issue.

I watched a clip the other night , probably the daily show(how gauche) where the plan was to vote for "change, the system is broken"... time to change, etc etc etc
going back to 1987 in John McCains own words
cuttin off the leaves wont kill the roots
that has to be done first
chaos reigns until that happens
until then meh its selective hearing

Tax and spend is a never ending cycle the way it is currently administered.    You tax you spend, then you think of something new you want to spend on so you tax more and spend a bit more than you brought in but that is ok, then you think of something new you want to spend on so you tax more and spend a bit more than you brought in but that is ok, then you think of something new you want to spend on so you tax more and spend a bit more than you brought in but that is ok, then you think of something new you want to spend on so you tax more and spend a bit more than you brought in but that is ok,

So what happens when you are taxing at oh say (for sake of argument) 99% and spending at (again for sake of argument) 110%?

I would imagine the voters would vote you out long before then. Let's imagine another, equally dramatic scenario. Let's imagine you are taxing at  say (for the sake of argument) 0%. What happens when you want to destroy some poor fucker on the other side of the globe and you've run out of smart missiles?

EDIT: Ah - I just noticed the main point. John Maynard Keynes.

I think that Tax and Spend is gonna get more action than Borrow and Spend, because it is going to cause pain to us who are doing it, or letting it happen rather than try shoving it off to someone else.

Great idea, I think we can all get behind it. But, can you help me out? No more taxing or spending. We are going to have to cut some things. Can you offer me some tax breaks you get that you are willing to give up? I mean being that it is your idea I figured you had some of your own to offer

No. Borrow and spend is. At least tax and spend is paid for. "I'll cut taxes" is just buying votes with bad economic policy.

Agreed.

But a viable plan for what happens next would be useful.

It seems many have great excuses. Some ideas to cut would be corporate welfare abroad, military expenditure abroad, all the pork barrel projects that do not bolster the economy, provide essential services, or improve the welfare of the people.

If the polticians are not pushed into looking at what can be cut, balancing the budget and stop with the pork barrel projects, then there is no need to thing of what comes afterwards, because nothing will come afterwards.

Since many people missed it in my OP here it is again:

"If a candidate is not supportive of a balanced budget, and laws that enforce it, then don't vote for them. "

Well then, since I haven't seen any plans from anyone, your only alternative will be not to vote.

I DO wish that every time someone promises tax cuts, people would say "What exactly are you going to cut to pay for it?" and "Wait a minute--shouldn't we balance the budget first?"

Money isn't magic. It doesn't just show up.

Uh...........excuse me Orion, but what politician do you know of that actively supports a deficit?

They all talk a balanced budget, so explain to me how I can determine who will actually fulfill their promise.

1) Check voting records.

2) If a new candidate, hold them to it and check their voting record after the fact. If they don't stand by it, then do not support them with a vote their next run for election.

Do you need the link to check voting records?

I can think of a great many things we could give up.

A great many people wouldn't like my cuts, though.
