DCWoody -> Economy grows faster than expected. (10/29/2010 5:47:26 PM)

In the 3rd quarter of 2010 the UK economy grew 0.8%, twice the 0.4% that'd been predicted. The USA economy grew 0.5% in the same period, again more than predicted. Fears of any kind of double dip seem completely dead at this point.

Unemployment in the USA remains at 9.6%, in the UK unemployment is at 7.7%, down from 7.8% over the quarter.
(USA peak was 10.1%, UK peak was 8%)

tl;dr - More good news.

Good news:) yay

The numbers will be adjusted downward, and what little growth there was is due to consumer spending resulting from earlier than usual holiday sales. Double dip is no less a danger than it was 4 months ago.

ANY growth is good news.

hertz -> RE: Economy grows faster than expected. (10/30/2010 1:28:23 AM)

Am I correct in thinking that these figures reflect the recent past - that is, before the UK government's moves to completely destroy the UK economy have actually happened? I think I am.

DCWoody -> RE: Economy grows faster than expected. (10/30/2010 7:36:11 AM)

@Willbe, .8% a quarter isn't 'little growth', and .5% is more than the previous...when everyone (such as you) was predicting lower. And double dip is clearly less of a likelyhood as time goes on...that shouldn't need pointing out.

@hertz, they're for July, Aug, Sept, 2010...so mostly the previous govts work, if you ascribe that economies are controlled that closely by governments. Much as the new govts policies may be objectionable to many, that they're 'destroying the economy' in any way is complete fiction.

@Jaybee, perhaps...but ideally you want 2% or more per year, (so .5 or more per Q) just to keep up with population growth.

We''ll see. Post the next lot of figures when they are published and we'll know if this particular fiction has turned out to be a true-life disaster story.

Actually I didnt predict lower. If the .8% you are referring to is the Personal Consumption Expenditure Index (since .8% was not the GDP growth) perhaps you dont understand that its growing faster isnt good.

Didn't we have a similar conversaion in my previous thread? I seem to recall I was right then too. UK economy grew 0.8% in q3 2010. Yes, that is GDP.USA economy grew 0.5%. And you appear to be predicting that these figures will be revised down. You also said that this was 'little' growth, which is wrong, and that it was caused by consumer spending, which is wrong.

Yes Woody we did, and yes you were right, ignore him.

Some short descriptions the bloggers come out with: Job Loss Recovery; Double Dip delayed not derailed; Systemic Stability: "Tap-Dancing on a Land Mine"; Third-Quarter GDP Growth Statistically Indistinguishable from Zero;  Official Economic Activity Is Virtually Flat Other Than for Inventory Building;  Fed Will Be Forced to Monetize Treasury Debt, Irrespective of Current Jawboning, Games Playing and Hand Wringing;  October Employment Data Likely Will Disappoint Market.

TotalDiscipline -> RE: Economy grows faster than expected. (10/31/2010 2:13:47 AM)

grow might be the wrong word for something that is recovering

No, growth. Congratulations on the dumbest post this thread though.

Musicmystery -> RE: Economy grows faster than expected. (10/31/2010 11:33:52 AM)

There's plenty of growth in the U.S. economy. Has been for six quarters.

There's also tight credit and uncertainty, however, making hiring/expanding a decision many are putting off. This in turn keeps households uncertain and suppresses spending (decreasing demand).

It does, at least, encourage saving, something that will help long term. And it gets many to look realistically at their financial status.

But until those change, growth will continue to happen where alternates to hiring are successful--not the outsourcing people erroneously assume, but producing more with less (efficiency has increased).

If youre going to respond to something I wrote about the US and quote UK figures, blame yourself for the confusion. And nothing I said was wrong ABOUT THE US.

thornhappy -> RE: Economy grows faster than expected. (10/31/2010 5:15:49 PM)

One thing going on that's doing us no favor is the extremely low interest rates.  Banks are sucking up this cheap money but not lending to small businesses that need it (credit remains extremely tight at the small scale).  Large corporations are sucking it up and sitting on it.  Seniors that depended on interest on their retirement savings are getting bupkis.

I'm thinking business is going to have to break the cycle by slow hiring; banks, by increased lending to small players; and if people see that jobs are going up they'll be more likely to spend a bit.

Business is the only means of breaking the cycle, but that will not happen as long as there is uncertainty over the cost of doing business, including taxes, health care and cap and trade.
