I'm of two minds.  As a study of contemporary culture, okay.  But it doesn't feel right that this kind of thing is for college credit.

My objection is that the teacher just came out with a zombie book, which no doubt is required reading. Tailoring your class to sell your book is low class. If instead of zombies, they were reading such classic literature as Frankenstein and Dracula, would that somehow be more acceptable?

I remember courses on children's lit, including such books as Alice in Wonderland and Tom Sawyer. Is Alice in Wonderland really a book that requires a college course to be able to understand it?

Celeste, read The Annotated Alice, and see what was behind the passages.

You can read Alice as simply a children's book and not need a college course but if you instead examine it as a seminal work by one of the leading mathematicians and logicians of his era then you would be well served to have some guidance.

The course was children's lit and it did no in depth analysis. I didn't take it, but others did. Additionally, what isn't said is if this is a Freshman English class. If so, it doesn't matter what they read or if they just watch movies. The purpose of those classes is to teach the kids to write college level papers. 1 - 2 page essays due damn near every class with a five pager once every month. It isn't about the reading, just the writing.

Hehehehe. I was overextended one semester, and decided to round out my schedule with a nice no brainer class called, "Films of Clint Eastwood." My clever plan backfired. That guy was just an asshole with the papers.

Nope, that was his job. To bring up writing skills to a college level. Freshman English classes are on fun subjects because they know the kids won't enjoy the assignments, so they might as well enjoy part of it.

Ok, they can only have zombie class if they show all the classics, such as the "___ of the Dead" series, and they must write a paper on Michael Jackson's Thriller and show they know some of those moves as part of their final exam. Me, I'd much rather take a vampire class, awright..
