Corruption Perceptions Index - 10/30/2010 5:19:50 AM

Living in the wonderful free democracies we do, we are very lucky to be in the position where we can choose good, transparent government whose members have integrity and are honest. There's a table here which puts our good honest governments into some sort of order.

The US and UK are at 22 and 20 on the list. Not that unexpected, really - we're pretty rubbish at setting good examples for the rest of the world to aspire to - maybe you remember, just a few weeks ago, we also did pretty badly at Press Freedom?

The usual suspects are at the top of the list - the Nordic countries, New Zealand and Canada. That's to be expected.

Does it ever depress anyone that our respective nations are really good at talking the talk about how democratic they are, but when push comes to shove, we are always nowhere near the top when it comes to actually walking the walk?

Chart seems right to me. Our government has always seemed clear as mud.

Democracy is a messy business. No one is going to be perfect.The point is to keep trying for perfection.

Corruption is, for obvious reasons, extremely hard to work out. This measurement is the only national comparison worth paying attention to, but don't pay too much attention. It's a measure of how corrupt people think their nation is. For example, 5 years ago the UK was in the top 10. Now, after the expenses scandal, we've slipped ten places.
The UK hasn't suddenly become more corrupt (if anything it's become less so, the new parliamentary expenses system is very secure), it's just that 'we' didn't 'know' back then (it wasn't exactly hidden, just the papers didn't focus on it)....and now, it's a big subject.
It's a good idea, in theory, to at least try to measure these sort of things....but I don't reckon these rankings are particularly helpful.

The results regarding the US do not represent corruption correctly. The huge component (compared to the other countries) that is sometimes called "legal corruption" is not accounted here (hard to do so). The USA, of course, has huge amount of "legal corruption" (government sponsored bogus accounting, super bonuses based on it, certain types of lobbying, "pet" projects, pork ..... and so on). Not bad idea though (Russians should learn): let us make all corruption legal.
