Lucylastic -> Jon Stewart Rally Attracts Estimated 215,000 (10/31/2010 6:32:31 AM)

http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-503544_162-20021284-503544.html

An estimated 215,000 people attended a rally organized by Comedy Central talk show hosts Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert Saturday in Washington, according to a crowd estimate commissioned by CBS News.

CBS News also commissioned AirPhotosLive.com to do a crowd estimate of Glenn Beck's "Restoring Honor" rally in August. That rally was estimated to have attracted 87,000 people. Amid criticism from conservatives that the estimate was low, CBS News detailed the methodology behind it here.

(Credit: AirPhotosLive.Com) The National Park Service does not estimate crowds. The New York Times' Brian Stelter wrote on Twitter during the event that the Park Service privately told Viacom there were "well over 200,000" people at the rally, according to an executive.

yay

I wouldn't count on CBS's numbers, they estimated Beck's rally at 87,000 after all

I've seen the ONE photo they are using to show how many people where at the rally to "prove" there were more then were at Becks. What a crock photo. First, the photo isn't even HIGH ENOUGH to show how far back the people were to the Washington Monument. You see maybe only half way there.

At Becks rally, you saw everything. The entire mall. Your picture does not show the entire mall. The number of people will be judged by showing both pictures side by side. After all, what is there to hide?

And I actually really really loved the rally yesterday. But I don't want to see pictures that don't show the whole crowd. Lets see FULL areal shots.

MissAsylum -> RE: Jon Stewart Rally Attracts Estimated 215,000 (10/31/2010 7:38:50 AM)

i honestly found out about what was going on en route to a wedding that I was doing makeup for. the wedding was at 1:45, i left early, entered DC at 10:20,  didn't get to the venue until 11:50.

the cause was great, but it gave me a headache!

Lucylastic -> RE: Jon Stewart Rally Attracts Estimated 215,000 (10/31/2010 7:44:56 AM)

If you have only seen one picture, I suggest you have a lil look around... or wait until the full set of pictures are on the website, it is less than 24 hours after the event, the beck rally took more than 48 hours to go up to
oh check out huffpost..they have ohhh maybe 5 really good crowd shots
or check out the many many live cams from the event on you tube
its really easy if you use the "search" boxthere are tons more, but i dont have the desire to do the work for you.. either believe it or not..

Sserpentia -> RE: Jon Stewart Rally Attracts Estimated 215,000 (10/31/2010 8:06:08 AM)

Well, I'm looking at Airphotoslive.com. They did both rallies. So far.....not seeing it.

Sserpentia -> RE: Jon Stewart Rally Attracts Estimated 215,000 (10/31/2010 8:23:07 AM)

So here is your side-by-side photos. Seems to be a lot of green at the rally yesterday. But it was still really good.

So much for a non-biased organization to give "approximate" count.

I didn't see any misspellings on any of the signs, either

I said I actually loved the rally yesterday. I just have a problem with the media who has an agenda. I don't care how many people attended each rally...but don't tell us one thing when the pictures clearly tell a different story. I'm just tired of politicians and the media lying to us all the time. It's that simple.

Green space can be seen at the back of Stewart's rally, but that is a result of those spaces being blocked for turf restoration by the National Park Service.

Might pay to find out why there is alot of green space, dont you think?

EternalHoH -> RE: Jon Stewart Rally Attracts Estimated 215,000 (10/31/2010 9:07:21 AM)

Both of those photos were taken from the top of the Washington Monument. There is telephoto compression in the Sanity rally (the view has to 'reach' farther) that is not present in the Beck rally photo. From the photos, courtesy of telephoto compression, it would appear that the Capitol is closer to the Washington Monument than the Lincoln Memorial, but we know its not.  The circle of the Beck rally map is too big (by at least 30%) as it encompasses the Washington Monument itself, rather than end at the pool.

The 4 square buildings on the right side of the Sanity photo is the Smithsonian, and the extreme corner of the round building is the Hirshorn Museum of Modern Art. The sanity rally clearly extends down past the Smithsonian to 7th street, with the outer portions extending beyond 7th street.. However, the circle on the map shows the rally ending at 6th street.

I guess bloggers are equally deceptive as established media outlets

FR

I don't get the defensive/quasi-partisan reaction some posters have displayed on the threads about this.

It's a fun stunt presented by two comedians that happens to make a bottom line accurate point about ridiculous rhetoric. Comedy does that.

These reactions rather underscore the point.

Let go. Laugh a little.

They're comics.

This.

I watched it yesterday, thought it was great. Loved Crazy Train with Ozzie. Ofcourse that is the Patriots home field song, but... back to the topic. I thought of it as pure entertainment. I think the media has made it out to be more than it was.

Sserpentia -> RE: Jon Stewart Rally Attracts Estimated 215,000 (10/31/2010 10:01:13 AM)

It shouldn't be a competition between the rallies. They were completely different in their message. So to say "Stewart had more than Beck, YAY!". First, even if he did, who gives a rats ass? Some people act like Beck was holding a KKK rally or something.

But just the fact that anyone could look at that photo and say, "yeah, it was only 87,000 people".....is just ridiculous.

tazzygirl -> RE: Jon Stewart Rally Attracts Estimated 215,000 (10/31/2010 10:04:20 AM)

Funny, you state

Then end it with...

Hypocritical much?

I had to work so i didnt see past the part with Kareem coming onto the stage.

The Music was great!

The people attending seemed to be having a blast.

I wish i could have gone.

No more than they did with the national "AA meeting" held this past August.
