FirmhandKY -> Corrupt Bastards? (10/31/2010 8:57:47 PM)

One of Joe Miller's (Republican/TEA Party supported) campaign workers had a conversation with a CBS TV affiliate, but someone forgot to push the "End" button after the conversation, and some of comments of the reporters were recorded:

 Reporter Planning Conversation

What does this conversation lead you to believe that they were planning on doing?

Also, for my distrustful friends, the conversation has been acknowledged as accurate by KTLA, although they dispute the meaning of it:

KTVA Responds to Miller Campaign Allegation
Statement From General Manager
KTVA CBS 11
Created: 10/31/2010 10:17:21 AM PDT
Released October 31, 2010: 9:17 a.m. (Alaska Standard Time)

..." KTVA General Manager Jerry Bever says, "It's unfortunate that this recording has happened. ...

"While the recording is real, the allegations are untrue," said Bever. "The recording was the result of a cell phone not being hung up after a call was placed to Randy DeSoto, Joe Miller campaign spokesperson, Thursday afternoon to discuss Joe Miller's appearance on that evening's newscast. That phone call was placed near the end of a coverage planning meeting in our newsroom regarding that evening's Miller rally in downtown Anchorage. The group of KTVA news personnel was reviewing potential "what-if" scenarios, discussing the likelihood of events at the rally and how KTVA might logistically disseminate any breaking news."

"While the recording is real, the allegations are untrue," ?  WTF?

"Fake but accurate" becomes "Accurate but fake"?

I dunno.  I listened to it, and it certainly sounds like they were trying to figure out how to massage the story to portray Miller as either a "sexual molester" supporter, or wanted to try to get someone in his audience into a fight, so that they could do what the leftist activist did to Rand Paul's people

Your take?

A campaign worker says something on a cell phone ? who cares.

FirmhandKY -> RE: Corrupt Bastards? (10/31/2010 9:06:08 PM)

Oh, yeah ...

Here's the transcript:

FEMALE REPORTER: That’s up to you because you’re the expert, but that’s what I would do…I’d wait until you see who showed up because that indicates we already know something…

[Laughter]

[INAUDIBLE]

FEMALE REPORTER: Child molesters…

MALE REPORTER: Oh yeah… can you repeat Joe Miller’s…uh… list of people, campaign workers, which one’s the molester?

[INAUDIBLE]

FEMALE VOICE: We know that out of all the people that will show up tonight, at least one of them will be a registered sex offender.

[Laughter]

MALE REPORTER: You have to find that one person…

[INAUDIBLE]

FEMALE REPORTER: And the one thing we can do is ….we won’t know….we won’t know but if there is any sort of chaos whatsoever we can put out a twitter/facebook alert: saying what the… ‘Hey Joe Miller punched at rally.’

FEMALE REPORTER: Kinda like Rand Paul…I like that.

[Laughter]

FEMALE REPORTER: That’s a good one.

Again. Who cares ? Every campaign has hundreds of volunteers. This is a non issue. Good luck Tuesday..

TheHeretic -> RE: Corrupt Bastards? (10/31/2010 9:19:49 PM)

My take is that this reporter is going to be stunned at what happens on Tuesday, because she isn't going to know one person who voted for a Republican.

I'm not sure your appreciation of what happened is exactly clear.

The "campaign worker" was Randy DeSoto, Joe Miller campaign spokesperson.  The conversation is between the reporters who had just quit the conversation, thought he was off the line, and were planning their "coverage".

They were not campaign workers.

Well, not in the normal sense.

Here's how the management of a TV station should act when they discover that some of their employees may have crossed the line:

Cleveland Sports Anchor Terry Brooks Indicted on Kidnapping & Rape Charges
By Leader Staff. Published on 08/04/2010 - 5:15pm

" ... Any hint of improper conduct by our employees is taken very seriously by the station and its management team. We will cooperate fully and completely with all investigating authorities in the interest of a resolution that is fair and just for all parties involved. At this time, we have placed Terry Brooks on a leave of absence until the facts are determined and we can evaluate his future with the station."

that would take fox news and brietbart off the air posthaste.

So you see no malice in the TV station's reporters' actions?

mnottertail -> RE: Corrupt Bastards? (11/1/2010 9:55:29 AM)

Hard to say, I know that brietbart heavily and dishonestly edits their casts, and are in no wise even fleetingly credible.

So, I am unmoved in any direction, for or against here.  Much like the PIMP chronicles.

willbeurdaddy -> RE: Corrupt Bastards? (11/1/2010 12:20:05 PM)

When I first heard about this on the radio this morning (without actually hearing the recording) I tended to agree with the commenator...jokes are told in newsrooms all the time. Listening to the actual conversation, though, it sounds more like trying to find any plausible way to publish something negative.

Who cares? Everybody SHOULD care. A free and honest press is at the core of democracy.

You are assuming that everyone wants a "free and honest press".  I've reached the conclusion that this is simply untrue today, and is one of the reasons that I'm pessimistic about the future of the American experiment.

Uh, oh..............in the main, I am going to agree with you here, Firm,  or you with me.

Chicken/Egg/Heisenberg if we look close enough.

Thanks Ron.  Notice I didn't restrict it to a partisan bent.

Thus my emphasis on "should".

A free and honest press is at the core of democracy.

That ended when TV news was allowed to become a for-profit entity, rather than news bureaus operating as a civic duty and TV stations were obliged to do a money-losing newscast in exchange for being granted the privilege to use the public-owned airwaves.

News goes from non-profit to profit, it turns to crap.

College goes from non-profit to profit, it turns to crap.

Medicine goes from non-profit to profit, it turns to crap.

Penal system goes from non-profit to profit, it turns to crap.

Huh? When in the US was news ever a non-profit enterprise?
