Take heart my fellow citizens the nation does not end today. Although the forces of reaction and ignorance will do well in today’s election, both demographic and political factors indicate this will be a last hurrah fed by amnesiac media and destroyed by the natural aging process and the changing composition of our potentially great nation. Although not all members of the tea party are troglodyte thugs, far too many are and media, of course, amplify the fools as reasonable people make for poor television. Some of them are perhaps even people of good will who do sense that the country has changed in some negative ways in the last thirty years and are find it easier to shoot down at minorities, immigrant and other powerless groups that shoot up at the corporate and economic elite who have abandoned this nation when it became cheaper to manufacture elsewhere and who fund their movement. Yet, the simple crowd shots at these rallies, with there venomous signs and lackey speakers, show the age and deteriorating health of the attendees. They are sadly dying and the nation is becoming less white by the day. The future looks like President Obama: mixed race, younger and vigorous, not like the oxygen toting diabetic who would scorn the people trying to help him. Yet the movement may well implode before the inexorable demographic destruction. The more empowered the tea-baggers are by the election returns tonight, the more likely a presidential primary, which will already be a bloodbath because of conservative litmus tests, will result in the nomination of Sarah Palin (this is not impossible) and doom the Republican party to complete irrelevance (which is really not a good thing in the long run). I though the knives would come out Novmeber3, but Politico is already reporting Republican plans to decapitate Palin politically.
So take heart my fellow citizens. Today will be an aberration albeit a particularly American one, but the rebuilding of our nation is still possible and maybe one day we may have a Republican Party that again takes seriously res publica.

Humana called.

Seems there's an oxygen toting diabetic ready to take your heart.

Oh, and he says thank you, thank you very much.

Judging by the first post though, Chia, the liver may already be shot.

As an oenophile, I will readily confess to my liver having been put through its paces. It does seem that I have hit a nerve. Are the conservatives aware this will be their last hurrah? I would not have guessed at that level of self-awareness and I am impressed.

Not they are not aware. They are exceedingly UNaware. That is what makes the whole thing so delicious.

There is unintended wisdom in your post. Even in your conservative heart, you knew it would be a private company, Humana, doing the organ gathering. Well put.

Take heart.

Politicians are like babies.

They're full of shit and need changing regularly.

That is the kind of silly cliché thinking that appeals to conservatives too often. When new politicians come in, the same things keep happening. There is a systemic problem and changing the politicians usually only makes it worse since they are even more subject to the systemic forces. It is easier to support lazy measure like term limits than fix the system.

Too many of them get elected.

I do have a sense of humor. Brilliant one, if I say so...lol, but it is sardonic and does not always come across in posts.

I think we need to begin with public financing of campaigns. Aside from the corrupting influence of money on our democratic republic, the need to fundraise subtracts from the serious business of governing even if the money had no negative effects. I would amend the Constitution to four year terms for Representatives so that there is not a perpetual campaign. We desperately also need electoral college reform as it gives an unfair advantage to rural states that should offend all who believe in the ideals of our Declaration. This is a good beginning although there is no substitute for a well educated and informed citizenry so all long term improvement starts with better education and a culture that is not blatantly anti-intellectual. A great conservative beginning is having parents tell their children less television and more reading. I believe a true conservatism can be helpful to the nation, but that the unthinking free market dogmatism that reduces everything to a price is neither conservative nor progressive and is detrimental to our national aspirations (which I admit may differ, but I think liberals and conservatives of good faith want a more just and exemplarily nation)

Are you aware conservatives have been told this before in the past multiple times?

(And will again in the future?)

And that this goes both ways?

To the OP-

Einstein said that one definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again, and expecting a different result. Couple this with our decline in the mental health profession driven in part by big pharma and the insurance industry- and not only are we going nuts, but there are no docs left who can fix us.

I find the electoral college suggestion and the increase in length of time that representatives should serve to be throwing the baby out with the bathwater. Our system has worked reasonably well for at least a century or so. Since it's broken, we need to change what broke it. I do agree that corporate donations to the political system have become a nightmare, as have PACs. The problem is not in Congress- it's in the judiciary, since that's the branch that's supposed to provide a check on these systemic problems. Given the makeup of the Supreme Court today- we all need some very big shovels and boots- cause we're in deeeepppp shit.

to Chia and Firm-

Sorry- but most of the Republicans who have a strong chance of getting elected today are career politicians, not the Tea Party candidates with little experience. And if you think that all politicians are full of poo- then look in the mirror for the problem- we elect them, and thats what's been electable.

Poo? Really?

Alright, I looked in the mirror.

After the initial shock you bastard, I decided to come clean.

Forgive me everyone, please forgive me.

I'm simply furious that Obama didn't outfit Air Force One with spinning platinum rims.

Next.

I don't really expect you to understand this (I'm not fully certain English is your first language, or the United States the land of your birth); but, as humor, the above qualifies as ironic or perhaps sardonic.
Hardly brilliant.

The Court obviously is abdicating any role in ensuring a clean electoral system and seems focus on preserving corporate rights at the expense of the citizenry. I know it sound radical, but a w four year term is not radical and reforming the Electoral College is simple fundamental fairness. My vote in NY should count equally with someone's in Alaska. Changing the Senate would be radical (and I would support it, but can only happen with consent of all states. I would argue it has worked well at times, less so at others, but we should try to minimize the perpetual campaign.

It is this kind of brainless comment that makes real conversation difficult. I do not mind disagreement even the light insult, but really to claim English is not my first language, apparently because I use polysyllabic words occasionally, reflects such ignorance that it undermines everything you say.
