Down here in the bayou...it's not simply "tomorrow we will visit Mr Richard"
It's "On tomorrow, we will visit Mr Richard" (pronounced Reeee Chard [8D])

Laissez les bon temps rouler!!

I will try harder in the future not to use too much short-hand. I am from a gamer generation [but as I said, I even sometimes did that in notes to save my hand from cramping w/ I'd try to write things down verbatim], where if I speak to other gamers online (usually 90% male, I have to be able to keep up with them). Plus, when you're in certain games, you don't always have time to type out everything long-hand, and this coming from a person who loves to talk & type, but sometimes you need a way to communicate your intentions quickly, so the other person knows what you want to do. However, I realize it is at best annoying to people who don't engage in those types of activities, so I will try harder to avoid the short-cuts. I didn't realize it was an annoyance to anyone (but I suppose it's true in forums & things like that, most do have a rule about not using too many short-cuts so everyone can understand exactly what is said, after all, I can respect that it would be annoying to look up a reference sheet every time, or having to ask people to clarify or explain. Thanks for pointing it out to me, as I don't usually want to appear rude or anything.

Well, I had me a Texas style Mammaw, until the Good Lord done took her to be with him after 94 years of livin'. My daughter has herself an Alabama-type MawMaw and PapPaw, and let me tell you somethin', they ain't no disrespect intended when we call 'em by their names. So iff'n y'all don't like it, I respectfully request that you insert it in your anal orifice, sideways.

Oops, sorry, my California side came out just then.

This is also the same man who, when working for the State Park system a few years back, told a new recruit from Noo Yawk that grits came off'n those tall, pretty white flowers that grow all over the place along the sides of roads and such (which are actually Queen Anne's Lace, and also the above-ground growth of these odd little tubars that look remarkably like wild carrots). She believed him, and went out picking a whole bunch of them, got em home and had got so far as to ask someone how to then prepare them, before she caught on to the pwn..
(she was one mad Yankee, and didn't stay long; couldn't handle Southernisms, bless her heart..) [:D]

Uh, holy shit.  If that joke had gone any farther, you do realize it could have been fatal?  Queen Anne's Lace aka wild carrot is not toxic, but is an incredibly close lookalike and conspecific to Conium maculatum, which is very much so.  A relatively small amount of hemlock (100 mg of the active neurotoxin) can kill an adult.  This one could have been a whole lot less funny if she'd ingested any.

tazzygirl -> RE: Southernisms (11/5/2010 4:47:25 AM)

I truly question that "tale". Southern people i know (and thats a whole lot since i grew up in the south) aint that mean spirited.

YSG -> RE: Southernisms (11/5/2010 4:50:50 AM)

I will admit, I've got a certain weakness for southern gals (its that sweet lil southern drawl), but I will never, never understand how one can drink sweet tea without going into a diabetic coma.

Muirren -> RE: Southernisms (11/5/2010 5:11:08 AM)

Also, only a true Southerner knows the difference between a hissie fit and a conniption. And they also know that you nevah wash an iron skillet.

Honey, we're raised with sweet tea in our veins. It very well may be what makes us so loveable. [;)]

YSG -> RE: Southernisms (11/5/2010 7:05:38 AM)

Ahhh I see. Well, bless your heart [8D]

Daddysredhead -> RE: Southernisms (11/5/2010 7:07:46 AM)

Another bit of Southern-speak is the often used "what... for" instead of the word "why" when asking a question. Example: "What are y'all doing here for?" (Trans: Why are you here? or What is the reason for your attendance?)

Oooh, and another is the interchangable use of the words "when" and "whenever." Example: "Let me know whenever y'all get here." (Trans: Let me know when you arrive.)

sunshinemiss -> RE: Southernisms (11/5/2010 8:06:33 AM)

Boyfriends are gentlemen friends or beaus.
Drunks are drinking men

And you know we redd up the house and last year was 20 ott 9.    We also know that a lil dollop o' dippidy doo'll do you just fahn.

By the way, I actually teach "y'all" and "all y'all" to my students because I say it, and they need to understand what I'm saying.  I do believe (yes, I *DO* believe) I taught them "bless your heart" the other day.   I'm not 100 percent certain though becuase things have just plumb been going out o' my noggin quite a lot.  I may need to sit for a spell.

Praise the Lord, and pass the ammunition.

sunshinemiss -> RE: Southernisms (11/5/2010 8:10:24 AM)

As an aside, I'm wondering where some of these things come from.  I've determined that "redding up" comes from German / Dutch but haven't been able to figure out where the 20 ott 9 (the ott part) comes from.  Any ideas?

And Red, I didn't look at the video, but I'm a try (that's Yanke talk) to guess.  Is that (by chance) the DW episode where Julia talks about putting the crazy people right out there for everyone to see?  GIRL that is some freaky stuff that I can read your mind.  There must be medicine for that.  Do go on down the sundry store and pick up some pills for me, will you?

And for all y'all who need a little good ole, Southren cooking... and Soutren Baptist appreciation:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zZI0zO2TS1Y          An excellent song.  Rather right on the money, too, about the preaching... and preaching... and preaching... and preaching....

Yes, thank you LNT. We are non-professional herbalists who know our plants, after all. No hemlock or human was harmed in the making of this joke.

Miss Sunshine,

y'all are right about the DW episode. DW is indeed the heart and soul of every good, spunky, Southren gal. As to gettin' y'all some pills, I'll get around to it directly, cross mah heart and hope to dah, I will. [;)]

As to the "ott" thing, I'm not sure, but in Sri Lanka, they call it 20 "naught" 9. Maybe us Southren folks dropped the "n" as we are a bit want to do, and made it "ott."

The issue isn't whether you know your local plants, it's whether someone from New York did.

KMsAngel -> RE: Southernisms (11/5/2010 6:53:10 PM)

"naught" is another word for "0". for instance, 2000-2009 was called the "naughties"
