Virgin is proving me wrong even there.

What planet do you live in where you think airlines are not subsidized?

If it cannot make a profit it certainly isn't essential.
Check back with me when Amtrak supports itself.

virgins space flights are subsidized? Fascinating.
How much money did Washingtong give Delta last year? American?

The company is.  Subsidized just like NASA.  And sure, NASA puts private sector payloads in space as well, just like Virgin.

Plenty.  Every time they take off and land

At one point I would have said space exploration was a proper venue for government.
Virgin is proving me wrong even there.

Virgin would not be able to even consider their plan if not for the government research and investment that went into the space program.

A little boy was taken away from his family because of child abuse. The social worker from Child Protective Services asked him, "Where do you want to live?"

The little boy thought a minute, then said, "I wanna live with the Dallas Cowboys. They don't beat anybody."

Sorry, couldn't resist[:-]

Now back to the topic, this was supposed to be one of Obama's "shovel ready" projects, aka union payoff. I'm glad he canceled it.

On roads subsidized by everyone else on these forums?  Shame on you.  Sucking at the federal teat just like those unions.

Amazing.

Actually Virgin isn't really doing spaceflight. There excursion service isn't even to LEO but instead just to the upper edge of the atmosphere (100km). There are companies doing private space launches but Virgin isn't yet one of them.

However none of them would be doing so without the huge amount of R&D done by the US government into spaceflight and aerospace engineering.

Beats the hell out of me what crazy thought process goes through the "brains" of some state leaders.

Like everyone, NYS has infrastructure projects/repairs waiting on funding. They had to be done sometime, and when federal money said "Got anything ready to go?" our governor jumped on it and those projects have been done. Constructions crews went to work, and the rest of us have safer roads/bridges and so forth.

How this can be twisted into a problem remains a mystery.

Why not just nuke your state and claim Obama did nothing to prevent it? THAT'LL SHOW 'EM! Whoever in '12! Yeah!

Fucking insane country.

This was also an attack on green solutions by republicans as well.  Rail is much more ecologically green than trucking or autos. Rail in this country only came into being in the mid-1800s. The rapid industrialization of this country between 1850 and 1950 more than exceeded the pace from 1776 to 1850. And that was all enabled by a green and efficient transportation system.

We, given our auto and trucking culture, obviously prefer to send our wealth to OPEC in the name of 'free markets', while France and Germany use electric high speed rail powered by nukes and don't put their wealth into the hands of enemies.

more hog wash smoking guns and mirrors.

government funded projects for private corporations for more services at the end of the barrel of government guns.

you will pay in TAXES regardless if you use it or not.

just another bullshit trap to generate tax revenue and keep you in a system that will fleece you for everything you got until the whole thing collapses on itself.

walker was put in because people are wising up to the adhesion contracts and the voters have spoken.

this is not new york where people are stacked like chordwood this is boondocks and the people never got to vote on it.

Of course those who work for the gubmint rant every chance they can to promote more gub sponsored services to protect their own jobs at large.

And that's the same for a freeway, too. You pay taxes regardless of using it.

Its 5 million a mile for new railroad construction vs. 50 million a mile for adding lanes to a freeway.  You already ARE paying the taxes.  When it comes to our highway mentality, we just spend the existing tax money in a foolish way. We apparently prefer to spend 50 million a mile.

And I'm pretty sure we spend more than 8 to 10 million annually to keep I-94 between Milwaukee and Madison plowed and sanded and paved and clean and trimmed.

When you thin out the population in rural areas, then highways become even more expensive on a per-capita basis. There are less people locally to share (tax-wise) the greater financial cost of 50 million a mile over 5 million a mile.

As for 'the boonies' voting, well, they aren't necessarily the brightest when it comes to math skills.

Yes and no. Gasoline taxes, for example, and bridge/road tolls, are user fees.

popeye1250 -> RE: New Reublican Governor's cut jobs as first act. Why? (11/7/2010 12:59:21 PM)

High speed rail works well between Boston and Washington, D.C.
Of course in between those two cities you have NYC, Philly and Baltimore and a population of 50 million?
Rail between Milwaukee and Madison, Wis is just not cost efficient especially when you already have Grayhound and Trailways bus service.
And, it's not the govt's job to "create jobs" it's their job to create the conditions for jobs to (be) created but the feds have totally screwed that up by allowing those "outsourcing" deals disguised as "free-trade."

Even if they could find 2,000 people per day to ride the train at $20 r/t they'd be far in the hole the very first day.
