...do you consider yourself a Master?

I consider myself a Dom, but think that I am far from mastering anything at this point. Through out all the reading, exploring and experiencing that I have done, I have realized one thing above all else. I have realized how little I actually know and how much there is to learn. So when and how does one make a transition from Dom to Master?

I have no desire to be a Master. However in my eyes you make the transition when you have someone who trusts you enough to Master them. In my opinion nobody can be a Master of nothing.

I think we delve into muddy waters here, I have said it before, is a Master a Master if he has no one to Master?
I believe that a Dom is who you are, a Master is who you are in the eyes of your submissive.

Thank you both for answering my question. Your opinions have given me more insight in this matter.

In certain 'circles', one is considered a Master when it is the concensus of ones peers that they are a Master, and that is when the 'title' of Master is given to them

just a point

I think all you have to do to be a Master is tell people that you are one. Then put Master in your nick. And then expect every sub/slave to kneel at your feet. [;)]

I'm going to assume that you being a "smarty pants". LOL
I think if you have to tell people you are a Master, then you are probably not.

Easiest question I've ever answered on this site.

You'll know when a slave you value and trust, looks in your eyes and calls you Master because she can call you nothing else.

Excellent answer. I guess I had been expecting to suddenly reach some higher level of knowledge and experience and magically wake up one day a Master. I thoroughly enjoy learning new things and would like to thank all those who share their opinions for my benefit.

Merc and beth gave you an excellent answer. I would just add that becoming a Master is not a destination. You are always learning. You should never feel as if you have arrived or get complacent. Otherwise the slave who before was calling you Master may end up calling you moron or worse.

Just to put a different spin on things, I think you are a "master" of a craft when you can not only choose your actions in that craft but know the deep consequences of those actions -- not just the immediate surface changes/responses to what you've done, but an understanding of the forces set in motion (and how they're likely to play out) -- and are able to articulate it.

I'm considered a master in a couple of crafts (including in the kitchen; my Faire guild dubbed me as "Master Baker" and that is not a self-imposed title.) People will usually call you a "Master" based on the quality of what you do, and it seems to me that seeing deeply into your actions is a key part of attaining that quality.

So when they call you Master Bator, does that mean you've finally cum to your senses? [:D]

Estring -> RE: At what point... (10/1/2004 7:32:26 PM)

Hey Mods, shouldn't that be Master Smarty Pants? [:D]

Well said.

I'd say when you have completed a workshop on each thing it is that we do, is when Mastery has been achieved. But once again do you get like a drivers liscence or what? lol Mike

Temji -> RE: At what point... (10/9/2004 1:59:33 PM)

greetings...

I believe One is born... kinda like leadership classes in the military is where I am I guess... you can teach someone techniques and skills of leadership... but it takes a born leader when the bullets are flying...
there are many things that will make Me better at being Me... but I'm still Me...
as for having to have someone to call Me Master... not so at all; I am Master of Myself... if My girl calls Me Master, and Others see Me in that light, then I am in fact simply respected in My community...

be well,

Temji KnightStorm

EStrict -> RE: At what point... (10/9/2004 2:37:46 PM)

I agree totally with Temji. It is the same thing I say about my being a slave. It's not the collar, or having an owner, or anything else that *makes* me a slave. Should my relationship with Master end tomorrow, *I* would still be who I am. It's not something you are taught. You may be taught ways to be more pleasing, but if you don't *feel* the need to be so....
