A good mentor is always a plus. Read alot. Discover yourself. I'm doing all three and they all help in their own way.

Sam . . . a good mentor never hurts. The author of a good book can also be an excellent source of education. Both paths you mention lead to the same place. Perhaps a good question to ask yourself is which you would enjoy most?

It's been my experience in life (even if not as long as some others) that some people are entirely unwilling and/or unable to learn from others, they will never accept being taught. There is no right path, only the "right for you path". If you find yourself drawn to the idea of having a mentor, go for it. It that makes you cringe and you want to jump in and get your hands dirty, do that as well. Just make sure you are following what you want to do. Getting lost in life can be very difficult to fix if you don't stop and make sure you are going in the right direction.

Horses for courses. Some people learn best by talking things out. Others learn more kinesthetically. Depends on you.

I would think that good advice is always a valuable thing and can save a person a lot of trouble if it's taken to heart. Learning it all just by living is a slow and painful way to go about it--why not take advantage of the experience of people who have already been there and done that? It doesn't mean automatically accepting someone else's point of view, but I think if you take the advice that seems to you to be good advice, it can surely make things easier. Like this, for instance, which I referred to in another post: Think it would be really fun and cool to have about a half dozen slaves, a little harem of your own? You probably won't think it's so fun in reality as it seemed in theory, because there won't be enough of you to go around and that will most likely end up making pretty much everyone unhappy before long. That's been my experience. If it seems good, use it. If it doesn't, collar six slaves and try your luck. :-)

Life and one's own journey through the lifestyle does not preclude mentoring. Mentoring is not a have/have not status, but a process of sharing. Which is better, eating food or cooking it?

they are both of equal importance, just like being a mechanic, welder, plumber, electrician, etc. there is only so much you can learn on your own. reading the book doesnt always give the answers and hands on, that a person that knows WTF is going on can give. i am not going to have an electrician wire my building next door, just because he/she read the book. i would think a sub would appreciate the same skill/qualification level of the title of master holds. but if you spend all day in class, and no time in the lab, you are not putting to use what you learn in classroom. learn, practice, repeat. a little guidance, can help to avoid a mistake or injury.

This. With the caveat that when I was 19 there was no frikken way I would have taken advice from a grave dodging 40 year-old - So you're already wiser than I was at your age! There's a lot to be said for making your own fuck-ups and learning from them, but there is more to be said from learning from other people's fuck-ups!

Enough said! I was making a serious point Zevar, and I am devastated that it wasn't clear to you! If, when I was nineteen, I'd been offered the analogy you gave, my immediate reaction would have been to drink the water from my cupped hands. Not a "wise" thing to do by any means. Sure, the glass plays a valuable role, and the "wise" response would be to recognise that value. Can you not see how it is, in fact, very possible to quench your thirst without the glass? So your statement "C" is simply wrong? Can you not see how the experience of using your cupped hands might teach you to value the glass? So, again, I'm saddened by your response, and by the rather inconsistent way you apply these "standards" you seem to hold so dearly.
