This goes to an article from May 8, 2006, and even farther back into our history but I believe holds true even today.

George Washington addressed the problem of political parties 200 years ago in his Farewell Address. He conceded, grudgingly, that it is "probably true" that, "within certain limits" political "parties in free countries are useful checks upon the administration of the government and serve to keep alive the spirit of liberty." But he added that party spirit was "not to be encouraged." He thought "there will always be enough of [it] for every salutary purpose." As there was "constant danger of excess, the effort ought to be by force of public opinion to mitigate and assuage it."He compared the competition of parties to inflammation: "A fire not to be quenched, it demands a uniform vigilance to prevent its bursting into a flame, lest, instead of warming, it should consume."

Washington (and you) can lament the two party system as much as he wants but it was inevitable. Perhaps if he had the benefit of Duverger's analysis the founding fathers would have opted for direct proportional representation.

I believe that like he said, we should watch the parties. To make sure that they serve as a check and balance. Not allowing one to take over at the expense of all other ideas and concepts.

I feel both partie's can be extreme in their own way.I will probaly alway's consider myself to be a commonsense moderate.Extreme left wing liberal's are just as danergous as extreme right wing conservative's.Some on the left are so extreme they really do want socialism.Some on the right are so extreme that they want to do away with government altogether,basically to the point of anarchy.I don't think the majority of American's want either.I know I don't... Both partie's need to stop with this constant partisan nonsense.Not putting this country first and putting their ideaolgy first.Frankly,I am sick of the partisanship and extreme ideaology from both side's.They will be the end of this great country if American's don't come together for the sake of this country.

The fact that they're extreme or not doesn't bother me as much as the concept of "party loyalty". Party, party uber alles is a way to ignore the will of the people.

I think that both parties ignored the will of the people, until last November 2nd. This country works just fine the way it is.

ABOLISH both parties

This country was established so that a government of the PEOPLE, by the PEOPLE and for the PEOPLE shall not perish from this earth.

Our Declaration of Independence starts with the words "We The People"

The parties dont care about us, they only care about power and the sheeple believe them when they say otherwise.

Either party would rather see this great country destroyed before they let the other group take charge and that is what has been slowly destroying us for the last 30 years.

If you want someplace where the party is all important, you can go to Cuba, China or North Korea.

It is mostly the extreme partisanship that get's me.It does seem either party would rather let this country fall to the ground then let the other party claim victory.Just because a certain election dosen't turn out the way I would like,dosen't mean I don't respect the will of the voter's.This is how democracy work's.... What ever happen to "agree to disagree"?I voted for a variety of people from different partie's this year.I feel it's more important to vote for a person based upon he/she will do for the people,not because they have a D or a R next to their name.... I don't think the media is helping out anymore either.There's no more "fair and balanced" new's.It's new's media outlet's with their own agenda's.Our election process is drawn out way too long.We just finished an election and the media is already talking about 2012.Those election's are 2 year's away.How about those elected recently and our elected President come together to get thing's done for the American people.. I am sure this will happen without any problem's!
