If it is only a fraction of what they do, why isn't there even one ?

I'm not agreeing with you that what little PBS does in that manner is so left leaning.

I am asking you of all the things they do,  why is this what the right fixates on?  When in fact it is so little of what they do.

You just can't get past slamming the right in your posts, can you? Even when people from the right are agreeing with you? [8|]  Really sad if you ask me.

I dont understand why they are funded- but still need 4 fund raisers a year- and still have what amounts to be commercial sponsors.

Because the government portion is much lower than it used to be.  Most of the funding is from pledge drives.

They still have Maura Liasson (she's been on Fox); Juan Williams had already been warned in the past about comments made on Fox.

I remember most of the conservative anger regarding PBS was when Bill Moyers poked at some conservative politicians.

I think that a lot of the discussion may be a red herring.

Look at it this way, the Corporation for Public Broadcasting gets something like 420 mil. from the feds this year.  At the same time, George Soros has donated 1.8 Bil. to just NPR.

Public Broadcasting does not really need the taxpayer money.  They get huge amounts of private donations.  Especially in this era of so many cable channels and all of the money that is made on merchandising, there is no real reason that they need taxpayer support.

Another thing to think about is all of the emphasis that has come out of the government about people needing to sacrifice and what not because of the recession.  Well, maybe taxpayer support for TV and radio programs should be sacrificed.

Once again I see you go off on a tangent that has nothing to do with the post.  Your really good at that.  That is sad, really, really sad.

We were talking about Science and kids shows and Servant brought the conversation back to politics.    Just because you agreed doesn't change the fact that many on the right still fell the way Servant expressed.

I asked him directly why since again the political portion is such a small part of what PBS does why fixate on that.  Please explain to me how that was bashing the right?

I started this thread so you will have to enlighten me as to where the red herring is and what it is supposed to be.

I like PBS.This is something that is well worth the funding.I've lived in some rather rural area's before and it's nice to have something like PBS to watch.I do think maybe they could expand their program's.I like watching the BBC new's but I wonder why there isn't new's show from Canada. When I was living in upstate NY,I was so close to the Canadian border,I was able to watch the CBC.I think that channel has some interesting show's as well. The CBC show's alot of USA new's.Considering that Canada is right next to America,I would like to know more about what goes on up there. We show alot of Bristish programming on our American channel's.BBC,CBC and PBS all serve an important, vital function in society.Private owned TV channel's are more concerned with rating's and money.I like to watch some educational programming. To be fair, yes, some of the new's may tend to be alittle to the left. However,it's mostly a non-biased,non partisan new's.Probaly the closest thing the USA really does have to "fair and balanced".

thishereboi -> RE: Public Broadcasting (11/11/2010 4:46:05 AM)

I have tried to explain this to you several times and you still have to ask? Any time you lump a whole group together and assume they all think alike, you are doing them and yourself a disservice.

Now had you simply asked sfu why he was fixating on that instead of this

"I am asking you of all the things they do,  why is this what the right fixates on?  When in fact it is so little of what they do."

Then it would make sense, but you didn't, did you?

I hear PBS has a new show specifically for the apostrophe challenged.

Not 'left leaning' ? They just fired Jaun Williams .

No kidding?

And that was discussed over and over on this board, yet you bring it up as if it were fresh news.

It is nothing more than a distraction and a way for both sides to demonize the other.

1.  Taxpayer funded radio and TV is not really needed.

2.  The actual amount that the TV and radio receives is not really all that much in the scheme of things.

The whole thing just gives both sides something to scream about.

1.  It is for the kiddies!

2.  It is liberal brain-washing!

Personally I disagree with taxpayer funded radio and TV.  However I also think that there are other things that need to be concentrated on first.  I do not see any "winners" out of a de-funding fight.

A country that is rapidly falling behind in Science and math.

The liberal mindset that produced our failing public schools is behind NPR.

Why is it that all liberals say that NPR is nonpartisan, and conservatives say it is liberal?
Could it be that liberals have a vested interest in saying so?
What hidden vested interest could conservatives have in castigating it, in defunding it? It must just be that we are stupid, right?

There is 1, countem 1, out of 28 or so journalists on NPR that could be considered "conservative". After that Juan Williams was the furthest "right", while still being somewhat left of center.

And you are right about the reason our schools are so deficient in science and math...all of the nonsense courses and "nobody fails" policies, so no one realizes how fucking dumb they really are. And you can add a good portion of the childhood obesity that liberals whine about....PE is defunded while sex education and other liberal pets crowd out academics.

mnottertail -> RE: Public Broadcasting (11/11/2010 7:33:39 AM)

I thought you conservatives were the purveyors of the fine no child left behind asswipe.  And isn't your fine beacon of light, one Sarah Palin the one who neglected to tell her daughter, just say no?  I mean that is your sex education.

We should have these kids learnt in about a year your way.

It made sense as asked to Servant.  You would deny that defunding PBS has not been a cry with many on the Right for years?  There were numerous post that tossed that in on the Jan thread.

Just on this thread you are out numbered by the Right sided posters who keep turning to the political issue.

When either the majority or a significant portion of a group  it is not bashing to ask why.

The discussion on whether or not to have taxpayer funded TV and radio is nothing more than a distraction from other issues for both sides to use and a way to demonize the other side.

You need not get your panties in a bunch when someone answers your question just because you may not like the answer.
