Well, not quite. Not yet. Give it time.

But they have taken the astoundingly stupid decision to have McDonalds write our policies on obesity and diet.

What..!

I hear you. It's bonkers. The companies who are destroying our nation's health in exactly the same way as they did for the US are to be given a key role in developing future policies to protect us from their additive-poisoned food. I can hardly believe it.

Here's the story. Read it and weep.

I can't tell you how upset I am.

I'd be upset, too.  The idea that the government has any business writing policy on what people should eat is ridiculous.

Aside from that, getting the "culprits" involved in developing the solution can be quite brilliant.  Imagine the peer pressure there will be for these entities to make responsible contributions.  Their public image will be on the line, and their public image can make or break their business.  None will wish to be seen as being only a token contributor... each will want to be seen as invaluable.  As they will be part of the process, none can assume the position of being persecuted.

The best way to get rid of an enemy, is make him your friend.

Not quite as ridiculous as being in the situation the US is in, where whole generations of fat kids are going to die fatter and sooner than their parents. Is it even possible to get insurance against Type 2 Diabetes any more? I think too, that you present the case in a slightly twisted way. It isn't government writing policy on what we eat, it's more government writing policy on public health. What food companies put in their food products is part of that equation, and a legitimate target, in my opinion.

I don't think so. They'll just use the opportunity to pass the buck and the air of legitimacy being part of a policy group will lend their businesses as they buck-pass makes my blood run cold.

There will be no peer pressure. The CM conservatives will be along in a moment to explain why this is all the fault of the public. 'Fat people are fat because they eat too much, not because their diet has been poisoned by fat-mongers'. The poisoned food people all speak with the same voice.

I don't care if they feel persecuted. I just want them to stop selling shit as if it were food. In the case of McDonalds, there's literally shit in the food. It's not good enough.

There's something horribly wrong with that logic.

You are right to an extent, it is people's own responsibility to eat healthily but people can only do so if they are informed as to what is going into food. The government is responsible for making sure the industry is regulated and people know through food labelling etc. Additionally we have a state funded NHS therefore people have a responsibility to take care of themselves and not overburden it with conditions that could be prevented at an earlier stage such as type two diabetes and heart disease. You have private healthcare so you can pay a premium to be fat and unhealthy, this doesn't affect anyone else.

Pointless comparing two societies with different ideologies as to what government should and shouldn't do for its people.
