That's not how it happened.

On Cinco de Mayo, some students complained that other students bringing the Mexican flag "disrespected" the U.S. THIS is where the bullshit should have stopped--those complaining students should not have been indulged. It's a fricking holiday. Learn. It's school!

THIS incident is pissed off adolescents dishing payback. And given the context--you can see why (from a kid's perspective). Of course, this also could have been used as a learning experience--it's Veteran's Day.

Nobody harassed him either. The kids bitched to a supervisor, who asked the student to remove it.

That the adults are no smarter than the children is the disturbing part.

Though all this, apparently, took place outside of the classroom.

Yes I do agree with you but who is bringing the racial tension now? My point is this needs to be addressed, not with banning all displays of patriotism, but getting to the real problems that are encouraging this behavior. Otherwise these type of situations should not be swept under the rug.

I've no idea what the fuck you're talking about. What racial tension?

Since you apparently WANT this to be about something---it's a reflection on the uber-silly protect America knee-jerk reaction that they learned from their parents that the presence of a national flag on that country's national holiday is in any way "disrespect."

You're an idiot. THAT'S disrespect.

See the difference?

This past Halloween two K-5 school Principles in Rockville MD (where I live) took it upon themselves to replace "Halloween Party Day" with "Celebrate Fall Day" because the parents of 5-10 students (out of 350 +/-) at each school had expressed cultural and/or religeous objections to same. Rockville is a sanctuary city.

Lighten up you are going overboard again...I am agreeing with you to a point... But their is racial tension and it needs to be addressed. If you prefer go ahead and stick your head back in the sand.

I suggested a day of education… you choose to accuse anyone that thinks there is more to it then child’s play as America knee jerk…who is radical and who is not?

It's. 13-year-olds. Manipulating. A. Dumb. Playground. Supervisor.

Nothing more, nothing less. If Supervisor Dipshit had told both groups of students, "Relax, they aren't hurting anything," nothing would have happened.

NONE of this has to do AT ALL with school curriculum issues, which may in fact be packed with good ideas, including yours. We don't know.

I'd suggest replacing the school board with more insightful candidates, but that's another matter.

OK I'll agree you could be right...but don't you think there is a possibility that there could be more to it? Given the racial tensions in America with Mexican Americans and immigration don't you think this tension could be reflected in their children?

My point is this instance may be blown out of proportion but there are areas of America where this racial tension is a real problem.

I am suggesting educating people not ignoring problems no matter what side of the political spectrum you come down on.

Strangely google has nothing about this and neither does an old friend with kids in the rockville public schools.

But you don't think there could be any in this situation and all should just be ignored as inept supervision.

I think you don't know enough about this situation to determine any such thing.

If you want to imagine it, sure, lots of things are possible.

Pointless speculation--and again, you've no idea what the school policy is, just what happened one day on the grounds.

Oddly enough, the only reference i can find to Jim's post is this one...

Phil...please shake your son's hand for me, firmly!

Our children are indeed being brain washed. The Principles of two K-5 schools in Rockville MD recently cancelled Halloween festivities because of cultural and/or religeous complaints by a handful of parents. Diversity run amock.

Isnt it amazing that Jim posted that there too?

And my friend neither do you...So maybe those closer to the situation and say there is racial tension could be correct.

Sure. And maybe they were carrying knives, and both belong to families with criminal ties, and we narrowly averted a school massacre and the start of a gang war.

Have fun speculating. Trouble is, you can come up with anything with a bar set so low.

For the second question…does it bother anyone that young Hispanic students were evidently complaining about and maybe harassing this boy who was innocently just displaying the flag of his country?

I mean we can gloss over and conveniently forget this part of the story and not face up to the implications.

This young man was the one being sanctioned when those complaining and harassing should have been. If not sanctioned then a parents meeting would have been appropriate to discuss the situation.

I cannot understand how the innocent displaying of the flag of our country could be considered the cause for racial tension, at least on the part of the boy displaying it. I do believe the racial tension involved was on the part of those complaining and they should have been the ones disciplined.

This is the United States and its flag should be displayed with pride.

Butch

KD, I agree. "When in Rome do as the Romans."
WTF is wrong with people in Calif? They get upset over flying the American flag but not the ratbag Mexican flag?
The schoolboard should be looking at how many illegal aliens are in their schools and ejecting them.
When Calif. goes bankrupt they have no right to ask for federal funds and expect the rest of us to bail them out when they're spending $12-$15 Billion a year on illegal aliens.

P.S. Fuck 'em!

Ok, say a Mexican-American kid wants to fly the Mexican flag on Cinco de Mayo. He is told you can't do that. November rolls around and another kid is flying the US flag. The first kid is annoyed that they can't show cultural pride, so why should the second kid be able to? They complain about the unfairness of it, the school authorities smell "lawsuit" and tell kid #2 to take down his flag, too. This was badly handled both when the first kid was told to take down his flag, and all the way around.

The thing is that kid is not (in) Mexico, he's in the U.S. (hopefully legally) and foreign national holidays have nothing to do with us.
When I was a kid we could wear green but we'd never bring an Irish flag to the school with us! It just wasn't allowed!
My 4th grade teacher, an old yankee spinster who must have been 80 told us, "The only flag we fly in this school and in this country is the American flag!"
It would never occur to us to "sue" her for something like that!
It was handled badly, all that principle had to say was, "American flags only!" "You want to fly another countrie's flag go to that country and fly it!"
Can you imagine if someone wanted to fly Cuba's or North Korea's flag?!
What if some little skinheaded prick showed up with a flag with a swatzsticka on it and demanded to fly it?

Maybe it is me- but it seems like- anyone who is overly gung ho into any flag- is--  a fool.

I cant think of any flag that I would die for.
