LinnaeaBorealis -> Pain play post-injury (11/13/2010 11:00:58 AM)

I was talking with someone today & I mentioned that I had only started to consider playing with pain after I had been run over by a car. That incident left me with 8 fractures, some soft tissue damage, PTSD & chronic pain. I had always thought that the reason that I decided to try playing with pain was because I had survived the most terrifying & painful happening in my life up to that point. And that I then thought that there were probably other terrifying & painful things that I could also survive. As my fascination with pain play grew, the intensity that I desired also grew.

My friend suggested that what had happened was that while I was on the pain meds, my body/brain had become accustomed to experiencing pain, then relief with the narcotics. And that it had then learned to provide the endorphins on its own after the pain meds were removed. From that came the natural progression of a pain/euphoria cycle.

I'm curious what others might think or have experienced.

Sounds like your friend is an intelligent fellow.

It's possible. But your take on it is equally possible. As is the fact that they are both factors, neither one excluding the other.

Interesting. One for each theory. Or I guess that DesFip is for either/or. LOL

Don't sell yourself short by over analyzing it. I think you went through something scary and learning how brave you are gave you the balls to do stuff you weren't woman enough to take on before it happened.

Ahhhh, but my scientific brain just loves analyzing things.

In my experience, human sexuality is a terribly complicated thing. It seems unlikely to me that there is any one reason for any of this stuff that we do. I'm going to guess it's some of both of the theories plus a smattering of about 400 billion other influences here and there.

I'm gonna go with, "Your into it because your into it".

Note, Carol and I aren't into SM so my theories on this are suspect at best.

That could be right, based on things I've heard. Rather than the meds, it could just be that you developed a new awareness of things your body could do - so that would be sort of connected.   I have heard that there are a disproportionately high number of people from various health professions in BDSM, as well as people who have been patients. Like others said, it's complex.  Personally, I have no history of pain-related experiences and I like pain now. I also like to over-analyze.
