we have one that is fearless . i could see him facing down an alligator

MysticFireTopaz -> RE: Cat vs. Alligator (11/16/2010 3:42:20 PM)

That looks like something little Dusty would do. He's a small male I used to take care of when he was an abandoned kitten, who then ditched me and went to live with my neighbor.  He's only about 6 lbs. but will go after anything, regardless of size.  I've seen him go after dogs 10 times his size and don't doubt he'd go after an alligator.

Saw this on "Inside Edition" on here is the full tape.

Craziness!!!  *strange little kitty*  [:D]

My Chloe-kitty was about 1 or 2 pounds when I brought her home and Abby (our 110 lb. German Shepherd) peeked in her carrier, and she went puff-ball, hissing like a wild thing, scaring the crap out of our big, ferocious canine.  [8|]

*gigglesnorts*

Either those folks don't like cats very much or they've never seen a gator take a small mammal.  Luckily for the cat, those young gators were clearly well fed on human garbage; they were human habituated and had heavy fat deposits.    Not lucky for the gators however.  Human habituated gators are the ones who end up destroyed as nuisance animals as they will approach humans aggressively after being fed regularly and coming to expect handouts.

It's illegal to feed wild gators for a reason.  I hate stupid twatmuffins who don't respect their local wildlife.  It gets the gators killed and it gets pets and people injured.

I was kind of creeped out by how close they let the kitty and the people get, too. I wouldn't have been so calm.

Letting gators get that close to kids borders on criminally irresponsible.   I don't mind working with them close up, but I know what the hell I'm doing.  I also know what a crocodilian that size is capable of doing with its jaws, and how fast they can lunge in to do it.  They aren't for kids to play with, or near.  Those weren't full adults, but you're looking at 400 to 500 PSI of crushing power, and behaviorally they can't tell the difference between the food that they've learned is being offered to them by a human hand, and the hand itself or other body parts.  There are ways to socialize them so that they can make the distinction, but idiots feeding them is not that way.

There's also ways to adjust the attitudes of habituated gators without hurting them so they spook at people like a normal wild gator should.  Unfortunately they don't stay adjusted if idiots keep feeding them and teaching them that they should approach humans closely for food.  [:@]

favesclava -> RE: Cat vs. Alligator (11/17/2010 4:32:28 AM)

it looks to me like the cat was in a way getting between the gator and its humans. my late familiar got between me and a drunken male neighbor who was trying to assault me. hissed and growled.the neighbor ran away .

sirsholly -> RE: Cat vs. Alligator (11/17/2010 4:36:03 AM)

Someone dropped off one of my cats when he was just a few days old. Lord...was he TINY!!! He weighed all of 3oz and his first toy was a Q-Tip (he would drag it across the room).

When i saw this teeny weeny little scrap of a hairball scare the holy hell out of my older, 15 pound cat i named him Commotion. [8|]

Trying to get Lizard to clean the litter box is a feat unto itself...Usually Bo does it.

ShaharThorne -> RE: Cat vs. Alligator (11/17/2010 11:31:07 AM)

There is a show on History called Swamp People.  It takes place in the massive Louisiana swamps showing several people (usually men) getting alligators in a month so they can feed their families decently for the rest of the year.  Usually their kids are in college or working else where, but they come back to help out for that month.  It is an interesting program.

favesclava -> RE: Cat vs. Alligator (11/19/2010 6:44:56 AM)

DaddysInkedSlut -> RE: Cat vs. Alligator (11/19/2010 6:51:50 AM)
