The Hollywood blockbusters that seem to come out on a regular basis, the more and more stunning visual affects that delight the audience, but has anyone noticed what is happening with these movies we seem to clamour to watch.

Yes very effective advertising gets the bottoms on seats and there makes the money the production and financial backers see, but what else is happening, does anyone see it ?

All these stories, all these story lines, what do they seem to have in common, good battling evil, the usual approach the unofending belittled minority being the target of the powerfully offensive minority who become a power that equals a majority through their power and influence.

Just look at what comes out at the box office, are we being educated ? The latest special effects, nought but pretty packaging to entice the viewer and it works, but is anyone seeing anything other in the movie other than what is the fodder for the masses.

Are story writers trying to instil something via their art, are they trying to educate us ?

To understand though, writing is an art just like music and dance, and any other form of creative expression, writing stories that do or don't become movies is communication of ideas, hence my question are we being subtly educated via entertainment ?

Art and creative expression is a language for us to hear and understand what is being said.

Can anyone describe anything they have detected in a movie other than what the movie is as entertainment, or is it just entertainment to please and be marvelled at until the next ground breaking feat of special visual effects ?

Naaaa, it is the decade of the bad remakes with better special effects.

Even Avatar had a plot that was Pocahontas meets Fern Gully.

No one in Hollywood is going to back a movie that is innovative. That is why the most innovative cinema comes out of Bollywood, Hong Kong, and Japan, and occasionally, Europe.

Rent a copy of Delicatessan (french film) and be prepared to laugh your ass off. Only the French could make cannibals out to be so hilariously full of pathos.
The Vampire Effect is worth watching for the plush stuffed animal kung fu scene.

Now, if you want some different plot twists, have a look at some of the British dramatizations of Terry Pratchett storylines. It is the right season for a screening of "Hogfather".

Maybe I think too deep, I have been accused of it, but it's what comes I find when one has learned art related critical analysis and those old bastards the film critics who I used to think were full of shit, I now see what they are saying.

But the film that caused me to write this question was Avatar and I found it very similar in it's hidden message to what critics have already described as the Emerald Forest, Fern Gully and films of that nature, but might also go on to include the film the day after tomorrow and other natural disaster type movies that have more than a passing reference to man made activities as a possible cause.

It is like to me the film makers are not only preying on our insecurities, but seeking to reinforce those insecurities, create a real tangible thought that makes people think again.

Avatar was such that the beauty of the land was being destroyed by corporate venture, the quest for wealth and nothing will get in it's way, to satisfy the minority who worship the all powerful money god. The other thing the film highlighted was the military power available to corporate venture, does that not bear any resemblance to what we know of the world in reality ? But with Avatar, I detect a few themes that appeal to my mindset and fears.

At one time, but I suppose still is, most movies were about the shadow side of US government and how they are fucking over the people.

Others were creating impressions that hey did more or even less in the worlds conflicts

And finally you have the religious almost instruction in some like I believe Battlefield Earth although I did not detect this myself, and Enemy of god, the latter if you view the various forums like IMDB reveals a lot of hatred and reference to 9/11 due to that movie, I guess some not accepting a different interpretation to what is the common even questionable thought.

So, myself I find I am also susceptible to what I believe is the hidden something in movies and because of that, only certain movies are on my replay list, so far, these include Dune,Star Trek -the voyage home,Final Fantasy- the spirits within, Lord of the rings and now Avatar

But if these movies appeal to my senses in such a way that I can watch them at any time, what of others, do they similarly have a viewing list of favourites for whatever reason.

So, if anyone has a favourite viewing list of movies, may I ask what they are and why you like them, is it you see them as they are or detect an underlying current that appeals to you in some way ?

And there the possibility that certain movies what they inform of could become religious if not a religion in themselves.

Sorry Merc, but the storyline there goes much deeper than that on a much more historic level. The military that came to the planet were the europeans and the planet natives were the american indians. It is a reflection of the exploitation of the resources in the US and the systematic extermination of the native population. The american indians were/are very much in tune and harmony with nature. Whereas the invading culture saw territory they wanted to claim as their own at any cost, with no respect to the environment.
