The election is over, the holidays are upon us. Assuming he doesn't bow and apologize to the turkey when he pardons it next week, he should get some goodwill creep into the higher 40's. The next cycle is off to an odd start. The Republicans are assuming Obama will implode, and the Democrats are assuming they'll be running against an electable. I stand corrected, but only partially. If you look at the second link Bush was below 50% in almost every poll in late September of 2004, yet he still managed to win. And if you want to cherry-pick you can look at the graph and find Bush polling at 41-43% in several polls just a little over a month before he was reelected.
