I was sewing in the house, turned a porch light on forgot about it and went back to my room  in the garage behind  the house. The porch light is right next to my moms room,  and it shines into her room if you leave it on.

This morning my mom says I got a bone to pick with you, you left thelight on  and I didn't appreciate it shining in my eyes all night, I said why didn't you turn it off, and she's like well I wasn't the one who left it on, I'm not getting up and turning it off. Why should I?

That's the dumbest logic I ever heard, if the light was bothering you , no matter who left it on GET UP AND TURN IT OFF. I have no sympathy for any one who'd sit there an let something bother them and keep them awake* supposedly* all night because they were not the ones who turned it on.

Common sense and logic would say, if a light is bothering you, weather or not you turned it on turn it off.

If  the situation was reversed and it was my bedroom and the light bothering me, and I said something an she said she was sorry and I kept on carrying on about how much she had disturbed and disrupted me,* like she did whenI said I was sorry* about it she would of told me to go to hell or some other nasty reply.

Moral of my little post, is that if someone forgets to turn off a light don't wait all night with the light in your eyes to bitch them out fix it, and politely ask them in the morning not to forget again lol.

Either that, or don't turn the light on and forget about it......money to burn?

Mom usually yells at me in I have the hallway light on.  It does go in a particular way and wakes her up.  I can understand her yelling.  Its my fault for forgetting about it.

Since we started weird sleeping patterns, the light issue is moot.

I make the kidlet get up and put the milk back or close the door if he left it open. If I do it for him, he doesn't get in the habit of putting it back. Here, I would have called his cell phone and told him to come upstairs.

You leave it on, it's your responsibility to close it. If you forget consistently, write a  note and paste it on the door to remind yourself.

I would have got you out of bed and told you to come out and turn it off and I'd continue to do that to you until you figured out to turn it off when you were done.

....and then I would have turned on your light in your bedroom and walked out without turning it off just to show you how annoying it is.

I would understand someone bitching and moaning and going to extremes about something like this if the culprit was a habitual offender.  But if it only happens once or twice in the span of six months, then why chastise the person?  A simple "hey you left the light on last night." would have sufficed, or just getting up yourself and turning it off and reminding them in the morning.  Everyone makes mistakes, and nobody likes getting their faces rubbed in shit. (figuratively speaking,  for you toilet slaves!)

But like I said, if you are a habitual offender, then all bets are off.

I doubt you've never turned on a light and forgot about it. It happens

Yeah she goes off and leaves it on all the time. I do it once in a blue and it's the end of the world

Actually, no.....A) I don't turn on lights very much, I'm sitting in the dark right now using the light from the monitor and the TV, and B) I go around and check to make sure that I haven't left anything unecessary on when I go to bed, or leave the house.

Your mom sounds stupid.

P.S.- Ask her if she would get up and leave a burning building if she's not the one who set it on fire.

I'm in the 'Mom was stupid' camp. You don't teach people by harassing them; you teach by being a good role model, then harassing them entertainingly, and in a way that commands respect, not disdain; and by making intangibles such as time and attention valuable enough that the person will swim through cold water to get them from you.

Personally, I feel like the whole "if I turn it on, I should turn it off" logic is something that should have been dealt with years ago.  The spat between you and your mom should have happened atleast 10-14 years ago.

But, I feel like your mom was kinda right.  Its not that hard to flick a switch when ya walk by and you are done.  I do it quite often as I walk through the house at night.  Hall light, kitchen light - on.  Kitching light, hall light, bedroom light - off.  If I leave a light on and I remember it is on, it annoys the shit out of me knowing that I have left it on.  I cant sleep.  And its like a magnet pulling at me till I go shut it off whether I can see the damn thing or not...

i would of been sympathetic if she just left it at btw you left the light on and it bothered me, because I am a nice person, if I have done something to bother someone I am sorry, and I do try not to bother people. :)

Reminds me of an interesting scenario when I moved back to my hometown 15 years ago. I went to college at 18 and a few days and was basically on my own from then but, when I moved back to town (in my own house), My mom still had this idea I was 17 again. I had survived miami traffic for 18 years and, all of a sudden, when Im giving her a ride, it's OMG watch that car dont go so fast theres a redlight up here youcanmerge dontmergeyet watchthatcar. I found some clear road and sceeched to a smoking halt. I turned to her an very quietly said. "I have survived 7 lanes on a side for 18 years and I'm not 17 years old any more. You can drive, walk or be quiet while I'm driving. Your choice"
Parents dont like to turn loose of their authority over you. In fact, if you dont take steps, they will NEVER do so.

Noone can abuse you unless you let them.

One question. Who owns/rents the house and pays the bills? I was told for years "When you live under MY roof, you will abide by MY rules"

That is another thing I had to gently remind her of when I owned My own home in miami.

If you own the home or pay the rent, she is under YOUR roof and subject to YOUR rules.

Likewise, if you are still living at home and she pays the electric bill, she would be in her rights to wake you at Oh Dark Hundred and tell you to go turn the damn light off.

Hill, that would drive any one nuts I think.

Fortunatly, my parents have never been the uber over bearing parents who'll never realize you're grown up, and have your own life and intelligence and such.  They've never pulled the my house my rules thing, to often, and certainly not now I am 28.

It's her and my dad's house, and I would of been more sympathetic to her complaint if she hadn't carried on like a wounded victim who had no choice but to let the light shine in her eyes, hell,  I would be sorrier if she had gotten up and turned the light out, because I inconvenienced her and she had to get up, than her just laying there waiting till the morning to chew me out an say I kept her awake all night by by leaving the light on lol.

And if she did come out to the garage to tell me to come turn out the light, I would of gotten up and done so, because I was the one who left it off.

I fully support the idea you left it on, or open, , you close it or turn it off,  but I can't know that if I am not told till the morning an then they choose to complain about it keeping them awake all night lol.
