The Real Death Panels.

In an effort to save $4 million plus dollars, REPUBLICAN state lawmakers ended funding for patients on Medicaid to get organ transplants.

quote:

In Arizona, 98 low-income patients approved for organ transplants have been told they are no longer getting them because of state budget cuts.

The patients receive medical coverage through the Arizona Health Care Cost Containment System (AHCCCS), the state's version of Medicaid. While it may be common for private insurance companies or government agencies to change eligibility requirements for medical procedures ahead of time, medical ethicists say authorizing a procedure and then reversing that decision is unheard of....

[F]acing a $1.5 billion budget deficit, Arizona has cut out all state-funded lung transplants, some bone-marrow transplants and some heart transplants — including transplants for the condition Shepherd has.

"To basically renege on what you promised was [going to] be a chance at life is a very, very bitter indictment of the ethics of the Legislature," says Arthur Caplan, head of the Center for Bioethics at the University of Pennsylvania.

Caplan calls the reversal "awful" behavior because Arizona is going back on a covenant it made with its patients, and because these are patients for whom time is critical — patients who spent months, some years, thinking they were covered.

It is not like these transplants were not approved, they were, and the state cut the funding, effectively sentencing 98 people to death.

This is the REPUBLICAN idea of health care. People who because of pre-existing conditions cannot yet get health care (which will end under the current health care reform bill) or are low income are basically being told that they dont have the right to live.

Gov. Brewer of Arizona is saying this is President Obama's fault. Funny thing is that the state tried to do this LAST YEAR before Health Care passed.

One more point to make, in doing this, Arizona loses matching Federal Funding.

JLF  actually I believe it is a lack of money period.   All kinds of things have been cut.   all but 2 (if I remember right) state parks, all roadside rests, road construction except federal projects,

I will agree it is a shame, but not unexpected.   I read it in the AZ Republic.   Sad but true

I take it you missed the part about the governor saying it was Obama's fault and the new health care bill?

Gee what a great answer, I guess all PRO LIFE people (not saying you are) are in full support of this, or are they just anti choice (you know less government) and the hell with life once it leaves the womb, just like how they support life and the lies that got us into WAR, I mean no life lost there...

KenDckey -> RE: Arizona GOP law makers end Medicaid funding for Medicaid Aproved Organ Transplants. (11/19/2010 7:18:17 PM)

OK sub   I am not understanding the connection here.  Did someone say something about war or less government or whatever you are talking about?   Like I said above it is a shame   I am not going to run out and sell everything at a much reduced price so I can raise money for them.   I can't create tax money where it doesn't exist.   So please explain.

This is just too fucking much. But it's what I've come to expect from refucks.

We all know there are ways to save money that don't involve killing people. Turning the lights off in the govt buildings at night. Switching to fluorescents. Salary reductions for the Legislature. Cut the A/C back a few degrees. Turn off a few streetlights. Toll roads. I could go on.

I like AZ. Been several times. Even spent 3 months in Tucson. But I'll never spend another dime there again.

housesub4you -> RE: Arizona GOP law makers end Medicaid funding for Medicaid Aproved Organ Transplants. (11/19/2010 7:42:14 PM)

So you see NO connection with Medicaid, Health care and the Pro-Life position???  How can one say they are PRO_LIFE and then cut funding to help support life????  beyond the life of a zigot?>????  So the GOP supports life in the womb, but once it leaves, fuck it send it to WAR and cut it's health insurance

YEA the GOP supports life, if it can walk, then fuck it, send it to war, and not give it the same chance for insurance TEABAGGERS are whining about their first day on the hill. Gee how proud his supporters must be, ONE day and demanding public supported health care, and whining he can't pay into it before he earns it (that would be single payer option they voted against)

But NO NO nothing even close

jlf1961 -> RE: Arizona GOP law makers end Medicaid funding for Medicaid Aproved Organ Transplants. (11/19/2010 7:50:36 PM)

Strangely enough, other states with budget shortfalls are cutting in other areas, not medicaid. In fact, a few states are increase coverage and lowering eligibility requirements to add more people to the program.

Considering the anti health care reform, calls to cut both social security and medicare (the only income and medical coverage for many elderly americans) by the Conservatives I am of the firm belief that Conservatives dont give a damn about people who make less than $250,000 a year, and if you cant get health insurance because of a disability, age or pre existing conditions, then so what.

You know there was another right wing conservative movement in history that had the same idea about the handicapped, disabled and otherwise infirm people.

In the spirit of repeal and replace, here's the new Arizona health center:

I know they use florecent lighting, and I think they use a relamping program to cut costs, the last memo I saw (I was snooping) they did modify the AC.  But it is salary that takes the majority of almost any budget - Capital expenditures being the next big ticket item.

housesub4you -> RE: Arizona GOP law makers end Medicaid funding for Medicaid Aproved Organ Transplants. (11/19/2010 8:23:48 PM)

Yea, cause that WAR we got lied into has nothing to do with the budget, nor the 850 million in tax cuts to the TOP 2% get,

cause gee that has worked so well over the last 8 years huh????  I mean the tax cuts have been in place and they have not produced the jobs the GOP ever said they would, but still give the Billionaires the breaks they are the ones who donate to use.  I mean when BUSH left office, the tax cuts only lost 750,000 jobs per month and gave tax money to companies for moving jobs overseas (yea GOP)  they never talk about this...I wonder why

Hey! Maybe some of 'em will be Meskins! Save the cost of deportin' 'em! /sarcasm

Dumb goatfuckers in AZ are feeling the effects of the tourism boycott now, you betcha!

Wonder how many of those 98 are armed and pissed nutsackers? "But Ah voted agin dem deaf panels!"

i think the only reaction i can come up with in regards to this is: horrified.

It makes me want to cry, actually. Being a recipient of a liver transplant i know somewhat what these 98 people are going through...in and out of the hospital, the excruciating pain from literally feeling your organs failing. Wondering "if I go to sleep, will I wake up tomorrow?" Frantically writing some sort of letter or will to your loved ones (mine was on notebook paper, i was 15).

i like how they call it Arizona Health Care "Cost Containment System" so, their way to contain cost is to effectively sentence 98 people to death. Who, most likely did nothing more than have the unfortunate luck of being born with or developing a grave disease. How much money is this going to actually save them? How much is the monetary value of 98 innocent lives? i wonder how long it'll take them to wash that much blood off their hands?

Why dont you read the news Popeye, there is not now, nor has there ever been anything concerning "Death Panels" in the Health Care Reform Bill, as much as you and your conservative bullshit spewers want to believe.

This is the GOP version of health care for everyone, let em fucking die.

I don't think ever Republican would support cutting funding for something this important.Dam,the GOP in Arizona make's the GOP in Flordia seem half way descent! That's say's alot there.

I remember a while back, posters coming onto cm and bragging about being a part of the Arizona boycott. The ones in charge there were acting like racist assholes and the answer was to boycott the whole state and make everyone living there suffer. Now that the state is having financial difficulties, and having to make cutbacks we are suddenly worried about the individuals. They were living there when everyone was gungho about driving the state into bankrupcy to prove how evil they are, so why are you worried now?

Because it's PEEPEL...Peeple never die in Liberal Land, don't you know that?

Perhaps if the dumb ass Federal government didn't force Arizona to defend itself from stupid lawsuits, they would have had the money for the transplants.

This is just the beginning.
Cause and affect guys, you wanted Obamacare...You got it.
