1. The ban on earmarks.  If it stands, it will force legislators to look past their parochial interests and worry about the entire nation.

2. The Rangel trial.  Yes, he broke the law, but what he did is widespread.  It might force our lawmakers to get religion and act ethically.  (I can hope.)

3. Murkowski's election.  Technically, she's a Republican, but she owes nobody, especially not the GOP that endorsed Miller over her.  She will vote the way she damn well pleases, and only toe the party line if it jibes with her beliefs.  We need more senators who don't care about party.

Amazing anyone can win as a write in.

ear marks do not worry me.... it is a red herring.     until we cut military spending- anything else is futile/silly/impotent.

She will vote the way she is told or they can strip her party credentials. Yes, it can be done. Richard Steele waves a magic wand and "presto chango" you're an independent not one of US any more.

Scarey huh?

Hmmm... ear marks sounds like a bad word but... I wonder how...under what system... money will be designated for state projects of worth? Yes there is abuse but what will replace it?

Yes but how will the money be ...damn the word...ear marked. You see I don't think there is another mechanism to do it. Not on a national level.

Steven, we need more senators who'll vote the way their constituents want them to.

I was at my neighbors last night.

She   had it right in regards to local city meetings... "they do what they want to do".

Its early but heres my two cents worth:)

1.    They have already figured a way with loopholes, exceptions  etc or they wouldnt be putting it out there to be "stopped" smoke and mirrors I think

2.   I thought the GOP wanted to put an end to the ethics thingy? act ethically? they are politicians, it doesnt mean the same in our world. Hoping for too much I fear my dear Steven

3.   Miller is appalling he still isnt giving up and is wasting how much money on appeals and stomping his little bagger feet, some voice for cutting waste.
one rule for "me", one rule for the rest of the plebs. that should be the baggers motto.
He reminds me of a whiny lil biitch. Even tho Murkowski is a Repub and therefore not someone I would vote for normally, she would get mine in this race, simply because of his attitude.

I bet he would stop stomping his bagger feet if he had to do it in those moo shoes.

Where's the g-string?

Anything that disrupts the existing party structure, either party, is a good thing in my book. And, I can't thank you enough for saying "jibes with" instead of "jives with," which even supposedly educated reporters annoy us with.

My own estimation of things has Murkowski as being wrong on energy policy (that "drill baby, drill!" is just an Alaska thing, the rest of us can't be expected to understand local culture all the time), but she seems to be spot on in most other areas.

It is a shame, and I mean a real shame upon this country that there are so many straight ticket voters. No one looks at actual policy statements or voting record. The media has us trained to be single issue and "face" voters.

My own enlightenment came when the corporate ankle-grabber Jesse Helms threw Sue Myrick under the bus when she tried for the other NC US Senate seat some years ago. Sue Myrick had "traditional values," but actually listened to all constituents, and voted for their best interest as best she could. She got on the wrong side of Republicans as a result.

Hard as it may be for those in rest of the country to understand, Sue Myrick keeps getting re-elected by wide margins because it's the only way for North Carolinians to give Jesse helms the bitch slapping he deserves, even after he's gone.

Jesse Helms died in face-down, ass-up position for corporations, and provided his constituency for the same trade to his masters. Sue Myrick will die with that sweet smile on her face, dignity intact, and at least some number of people better off for her efforts.
