The Section 8 program has been one of my pet peeves for a while now, so this article was guaranteed to catch my eye. As Atlanta struggles to make a difference, instead of just perpetuating the generational cycle of poverty maintenance, all sorts of interesting issues come up along the way. American housing policy encourages the formation of households in which low-income single women raise children—exactly the sort of homes where kids’ prospects are bleakest. Crime rates, moreover, are consistently high in and around public housing, and voucher units have been widely implicated in the spread of social problems to formerly safe areas. The problem is financial, as well: housing vouchers alone, which didn’t even exist until 1974, now cost taxpayers $18 billion, more than the $16.9 billion that we spend on welfare. And it’s a policy that disproportionately affects the African-American poor. Nearly 45 percent of public-housing tenants are black, as are 42 percent of voucher recipients. http://www.city-journal.org/2010/20_4_atlanta-public-housing.html

Yeah, it would be so much better if we just throw them out into the street. It would certainly save your tax dollars Richie. And that's the most important thing!

I typically try to avoid this section of the forums, however; the OP caught my attention. Why are programs such as the section 8 program such a "pet peeve" for you? What is YOUR solution for those low income families who use programs such as Section 8?

I read the article to the end. A fairly expensive program shes running there. But, she is tearing down the ghetto and mainstreaming these folks with more well off white people neigborhoods so that the cops sorta keep the sheets clean there and don't retain such a backlog of complaints as they once did in the strictly black areas. They have to get jobs or be enrolled in some short term schooling. Some sort of Big Brother things going on there too. I give it a B-; C+.

I think this Glover lady in Atlanta is trying some good approaches with a work requirement and, while the nanny-ism of life counseling tweaks my libertarian streak, sometimes you do what you have to do. Actually, in this part of the country, I'd say 75% of those in section 8 housing vote straight ticket Republican. Tell them they're biting the hand that feeds then and they're saying "Do Whut?" But, their preachers tell em to vote Republican and dammit, that's what theyre going to do. Right after they go get their handicap plate for their car.

OP, thank you for sharing why this program is a pet peeve for you. I did read the article and as someone who is on a section 8 voucher I can't relate to most of what was described in that article regarding people on the program. However, I am not from Atlanta either. In Maryland, and more specifically Harford County children have to be enrolled in school if under 18. In my particular county the Housing Authority has "off limits" areas and "off limit" landlord where they will not allow vouchers to be used because of the crime rate or the property owners refuse to comply with program regulations. Most of the larger complexes and rental agencies in my area not only do credit checks but do criminal back ground checks for all applicants. (which cuts down on obvious criminal activity) Section 8 also does annaul criminal back ground checks, those with felonies, drug related charges, and various other chargers are not eligible for the program. When I was enrolled, I had to sign up for a budgetting class (which most american could stand to do). I was also given the opportunity to take a class on how to write a resume and to do interviews. Neither of which have ever been an issue for me, my issue isn't employment its that since having to go on disability my income is realistically at poverty level.

You hit the nail squarely on the head when you mentioned a particular county, Inked. Locality is a huge factor. What happened to my old neighborhood resulted from bad decisions by a city redevelopment agency, and bad policy from the administering authority has spread the problems heavily across this whole area. I don't live in Atlanta, though. Those are federal dollars, and it isn't just a local thing. Despite the best efforts of some to accuse otherwise, I think it is right and proper for our country to have a social safety net. I think it is also right and proper to aggressively go after the criminals, scammers, and just plain lazy, so their voucher money can go to someone more deserving. This isn't an entitlement program, and the waiting list can get very long.

Looks like we can safely say that the use of a cliche' is one of your pet peeves, Muse [:D] I would say the one I used would be the counterpoint to "Do the right thing." Can we settle perhaps at "unintended consequences can be a motherfucker?"

This isn't an entitlement program, and the waiting list can get very long. There is a HUGE need for programs such as this one, especially in todays economy. I agree, there should be more safety nets. I also agree that like any system this one has it flaws and can / is abused. I know a woman who was on a section 8 voucher who moved her gf in and didn't report it to section 8, so her gfs income was not counted against her. Even when it was reported it took Section 8 3 months to investigate it. I also know people who get kicked out of the program for not paying their portion of rent. I was on the waiting list for 4.5 yrs before I got my voucher and in that time, my 2 children and I were renting a 1 bdrm apartment from a slum lord but honestly it was the best I could do with the income I have to work with. So again, there is no easy fix IMO.

They used to try and push marriage as a path to success, but that hasn't worked out very well, since so many of the men in the culture are "parasites."
