The owner of a hero dog accidentally euthanized at a shelter in Arizona last weekend says the animal's war medal is missing.

Target, a shepherd mix hailed a hero for alerting U.S. soldiers to a suicide bomber, got loose from its home with Sgt. Terry Young last Friday.

Shelter staff picked up the dog at some point and mistakenly put it down.

Now Young, one of 50 soldiers who credit Target with saving their lives, said the dog's war medal is missing. It had been attached to the dog's collar.

In this country we protect our service animals. If a person fires upon a police dog, they're prosecuted as attacking a human officer. Target saved the lives of OUR soldiers. Criminal prosecution of this unbelievable act of negligence should follow-not solely for the loss this family has suffered but because Target was one of this country's heroes-her species shouldn't matter.
