No matter the politics of it or where it is. Obviously Mississippi is Mississippi...But the travesty of this goes beyond politics. I just hope Barbour does the right thing. Maybe you would think different if you were on a back road with a gun pressed against your head…But you are right…way overboard but why does it need to be a republican thing? Do you believe white democrats would be any different? Butch

On one hand, I can agree with you DYB, but on the other hand, it was armed robbery--a very serious crime, in ANY state of the Union. Yes, having a life sentence for taking $11 total, seems a 'bit' harsh (given what rich white girls get for crimes). From your article, it seems the facts and/or trial was not completely free of possible errors, to which and appeal could be made for a pardon. But let me play Devil's Advocate for a moment... A) How much, does one have to steal, in an armed robbery (when threat of violence or death is probable), to constitute a felony, rather then just a minor breach of the law? B) Shouldn't those citizens, who felt, the person holding a firearm (or insert weapon, if a firearm wasn't used), believing their lives were in peril, demand the felony? C) What role(s) did the sisters actually play in the robbery that allowed their three 'buddies' lighter sentences? Yes, it does seem aburd, what has happen to the two sisters, and yet, these three questions keep me from supporting your arguement. In the end, its not my decision, but the decision of the Governer of Mississippi. Still, I'm sure the Governer has someone asking the same questions above.

The $11 isn't the issue. If the victims had had more, they would have been robbed of more - that's just what they had on them. The article doesn't mention what I consider the important thngs, such as what their conduct has been like since being jailed, and what it was like prior to the crime. Poor writing.

I am curious why a Federal appeal has not been made since one of the three boys has allegedly recanted his statement. And why no word from Sharpton or Pres. Obama?

I usually dismiss these wrongfully-convicted sob stories pretty quickly. Some people- Al Capone, e.g.- are sentenced in a way that fits not the crime but the person. Other "I'm innocent!!" suits rely more on the degradation/loss of memory and evidence than upon innocence or facts. Preliminary research here, however, would seem to indicate that the sisters may deserve consideration. I found a couple sites saying there were no prior convictions, and a typically unconvincing plea attributed to Jamie Scott. What I did not find was actually more interesting: nothing in support of the sentences. Absent hearing from the other side.... BUT wtf is wrong with Barbour's "background"?? The implied accusation of racism is unwarranted.

While President Obama can only pardon federal cases, were he to speak out about this, it would become an international story. Pretty much forcing the Governor (who has stated that he feels no time pressure about this case) to sit up and take notice. Creating an atmosphere in which the press start questioning him about this case. You know, that whole critical mass thing.

Well, it's not about the $11, they were part of a conspiracy to armed robbery. But I do agree that "Life" is too much. "Five to eight" would be more appropriate punishment. Then they'd get out in 3 to 4 years. And if this were 20 years ago the jury would be all white Democrats and who knows what punishment they'd give them! I don't understand what makes people want to put a gun against someone's head and take their money. Do they think they'll get away with it? And then there's always the hazzard of running into people like me who carry guns. No-one's getting away with it then.
