http://news.yahoo.com/s/yblog_theticket/20101122/pl_yblog_theticket/florida-lawmaker-calls-house-ban-on-hats-sexist

I saw this today and just shook my head -- ya gotta admit its amusing

"Like other freshman lawmakers, newly elected Florida Rep. Frederica Wilson ran for Congress on a vow to change Washington. But her first order of business has nothing to do with health care, education or the usual mix of issues that come up in the early days of a new Congress.

Instead, Wilson's first goal is to overturn a rule that blocks her from wearing a hat on the House floor. The freshman Democrat is pressing incoming House Speaker John Boehner to overturn the rule, which dates back to the 1800s, or at least to make an exception for her. ..."

It makes sense.

Each new congress has to re-confirm their rules or make a new set.  So if she wants the rule about hats changed, this is the time to deal with it.

What else do you want her to work on, specifically, until she is sworn in?

Lets see. A freshman democrat wants a rule changed that has been in effect for 200 years ? With priorities like that she will have exactly 2 years as a member of the House of Representatives. She can wear her stupid hats when she gets off the House floor.

Did you miss the part about the need for the congress to vote on their rules?

I would much rather see her doing this now (since the vote is going to have to be taken anyways) than during the next crisis.

It is rather trivial, however just because something has been a rule for 200 years does not mean that it needs to remain that way.

Do you think the people in her district that voted for her might be having some buyers remorse. She won't be sworn in until January and she is concerned about this ? I also have a news flash for Ms. Wilson. The rule will not be changed. Remember, she will now be in the minority party. She will have absolutly nothing to say about anything that goes on in the House.

Actually I kind of figure that since she won't be sworn in until January that this is a better time to be doing this than after she takes the oath of office.

Whether she will get it changed or not?  Who knows.  I am fairly indifferent as to whether women do or do not wear hats inside.  My guess is that most people feel this way.

If she wants to bring it up thats fine with me. I hope it's on you tube when she does it though. You've gotta love the incoming democrats if they are all like her.

FR

From what I recall, you can wear a religious headdress anywhere if it has a religious significance, that means on trail, during a video deposition, in jail, just about anywhere. How is this different ?

I think the whole thing is stupid with three "o"s, but really how different is it than Trafficant's hairpiece ? What's next no gloves ? No green ties ? Bad enough you can't smoke. At least I can smoke at work. (BTW, I like Trafficant. Sorry Jim, you were the perfect example at the time. It was your turn)

What's next, no gloves ? (what about shoes then) or sunglasses. Wigs are in essence a disguise, so maybe they should have to shave their heads just to be on the safe side. With all those clothes on they could sneak all inds of nasty things in there, so maybe they'll have to disrobe. Most of them are probably Masons anyway so it wouldn't matter then, maybe.

I do agree that this is something that,,,, well time could be better spent. But then, no hats ? Why ?

"See what happens when you let men into the cabinet?"

What I love about the story is the claim that its sexist..Nobody, regardless of gender, is allowed to wear a hat, how can this be sexist...just because women used to wear hats indoors and men didn't (that's the sexist rule).[:D][:D][:D]

I swear US politics just gets weirder and weirder...no wonder so many of you guys are political junkies...its a never-ending sit com
