While surfing the web for storage shelf ideas, (Never enough storage space!), I came across several sites that are into serious hard core storage...some survivalists, others...just don't want to run out of food "in case". In case of what? We buy bulk because the store is far away and driving in Winter is sometimes not a good idea, but it's usually just the neccessary items, we aren't stockpiling for any impending disaster. I started thinking...what would happen if that disaster happened? You survived and fought off theives, neighbors and managed to hold onto your stored goods...for what, a year? Six months? Then what? Sounds like prolonging the inevitable. Maybe because we don't have kids, so there is no one to worry about besides ourselves and the dogs..but Im thinking if things were that bad, I wouldn't want to hang around.

By that time roads and rails would be re-opened and repaired in order to move food stuffs around the country. And the biggest die-offs from disease should have run their course by that time. Bubonic plague and winter do not mix well. It would also give you a chance to have put in and harvested one crop cycle. Really, this is a popular science fiction topic.

Yes I am sure that people with bubonic plague are going to have a huge die-off the first winter after a catastrophic disaster that disrupts food transportation and other services. There have been several waves of the black plague throughout history. People with the plague in less modern environments do not have a great chance of survival. And a less modern environement is what people will be living in, in the OP's scenario. I figure that if transportation is messed up, heating is going to be a bit primative as well. As well as water purification facilities. Besides which, the plague is only one worry. There are also things like TB and cholera, as well as all sorts of infections that people will die from because of a lack of anti-biotics. (No transportation remember.) And others that are on daily medication that cannot do without it. The die-off would be pretty big. Of course, if the people dying have a supply of food, that can stretch the livings' supply. Which would be a good thing as the first harvests are unlikely to be very good.

If things go to hell, look for mormons. Hey, a religion that has a tradition of keeping a one year supply of food on hand can come in useful in an emergency! (tongue firmly in cheek) Keeping enough non perishable food supply on hand for a good period is a wonderful idea. Think of hurricanes and tornadoes and floods. Think beans and rice. Snap lock plastic containers and zip lock bags can put enough survival supplies in the back of a cabinet for a month very easily. Stefan
