I like what I know of the 40s (my former master, much older than myself, "explained" this decade to me thoroughly and introduced me to its music, writings, politics, photography, and film) far better than the 50s. The 40s had such vigor and hope. The 50s struck me as a bit cynical, bitter parodying, rather tired of itself... The dress styles for women in both decades were wonderful, again though, I find those from the 40s noticably more stylish. Beginning in the 20s and carrying on well into the 40s and early 50s, the Art Deco movement produced some incredible and lovely nude female forms, in settings and positions that one can only term, "slave-like." What I found inspiring about them was not just the exquisite and erotic beauty of the poses but the fact that, in many depictions, these nudes were hard at work: holding something, carrying something, acting as furniture, performing some function or service. It's that latter trait that made them most beautiful to me. There were also many marvelous female dominant depictions in the Art Deco movement: stunningly glamourous and sensual women, dressed or undressed to the nines, taking their ease. You'll find a lot of wonderful examples of thee latter in Erte's work. Male nudes were rarer but certainly evident. Like the female nudes, you often saw them hard at work, their muscles straining, displaying their physiques in all their splendor. These nude forms were frequently incorporated into functional objects: they served as lamp bases, bookends, clothes hooks, even wine openers. As for these decades' connection with bdsm? As with the 60s, I think in those decades all those things we now term "bdsm" were not particularly censored or considered wrong or deviant. Sadomasochism was more out in the open and accepted as a natural part of human experience, rather than as some sort of deviant movement. This struck me as very refreshing. What about the styles and music from these decades speaks of bdsm to you? I associate Victorian clothing, which I love, with my bdsm feelings. I think I read too much Dickens in my 30s. ;) I also like some older-styled school uniforms, French and Japanese in particular. Some of these uniform styles have been around for many decades, so I think you could call them vintage. Finally, the simplicity of grecian style one-shoulder/one breast garments, whether floor-length togas or short tunics paired with gladiator-style sandals appeals to me.
