MrCyanide -> Spelling and Grammar OCD? (11/28/2010 10:18:59 PM)

First and foremost, I'm not here to lecture people about their spelling and grammar; Nor am I here to laugh at people with subpar spelling. And I am definitely not saying that I'm a spelling and grammar god. I am here to find out whether or not my infatuation with correct spelling is just a minor annoyance, or quite possibly a full on OCD.

The best way I can explain it is, is if you're sitting down at your house and you see a picture that's slightly tilted on the wall, so you get up and fix it. Though I wouldn't consider the action of fixing a picture to be an OCD, but the emotional tension someone may feel behind them if they didn't go and fix the picture.

That's the kind of feeling I get when I see someone spell something wrong, or use the wrong tense, I feel a need to fix it. It's not that I think they're stupid, but that I have to correct it, which leads to a lot of problems for me when it comes to speaking to friends and/or family online.

I'm able to stop myself from correcting someone's spelling, but it makes me feel anxious, and I won't be able to stop thinking about it.

I would consider that a problem that sounds a lot like OCD, but I am not a doctor and wouldn't really know. I know my son has mild OCD and when he lets himself fixate on something, he can be a real pain in the ass, even to himself. It's just best to find a way around whatever upsets him until he can learn to not have to control whatever it is.

Good luck with finding your answers and dealing with it.

Could you try and correct the errors but just not send the reply? Kind of like people who type before thinking - do the count to 10 before sending idea - just don't send at all after correcting?
For me I tend to be very blunt which comes off as rude, so I always take a moment before sending an email to go back and give it a little personal touch and softness. Takes just a few moments and saves me problems and the other person unintended hurt feelings.

What a great idea MistressEllen!

Actually if people could take constructive criticism, and others could deliver it properly, this would not be a problem.

Maybe CM needs a language section, helpful hints as well as entries about new acronyms that people seem to invent frequently.

If it isn't sent, then it's not really a correction... And therein lies the problem.

Just imagine that everyone who is posting here uses English as their second language. The point is to understand the thinking underlying the post, and not the grammar and syntax, yes? That is the point of communicating in any format, whether it be visual or oral. The point is to have the person receiving the transmission understand the message the sender is sending. It's a mutually inclusive endeavor. It's incumbent upon both parties to make sure that the message is understood. The transmitter needs to make sure that his/her message is clear, concise, and consistent (internally rational and coherent). The recipient of the message needs to make sure that he/she understands the terms that the message sender is using, and if there is any misunderstanding, to speak up and ask for clarification.

Most of the posts I see here, and on other similar forums, indicate that there is a lack of common referents. There is no point in trying to derive equations which represent, say, the determination of the volume of a 3 dimensional object if there is not agreement that an x:y:z coordinate scheme can be the foundation upon which said equations are derived.

The same problem is encountered with grammar and syntax.

USWT

U Stuck with it
You are stuck wit it
You're stuck with it

There there is what's their's, and they're there. Two of them are too much to stand, so then we go away, rather than stay. Which is a witch, either or neither ?

Pick on the language, it deserves it.

Hmmm, "OCD?" It could be I guess.
I notice it a lot when the lefties are losing an argument (which is very common) they start correcting people's spelling and punctuation. After that they go to name-calling.

"I notice it a lot when the lefties are losing an argument "

I NOTICE it ALOT when LEFTIES are..........

You know I just told a twenty year old kid last night about ten ways to be a terrorist without leaving the house. On request I can post them. I diagnose and repair, I think. I am probably not stupid. Perhaps crazy but not stupid. (don't ever throw a microwave oven away)

But to this day I have no idea what the "left" or the "right" means. And I don't want to. Each argument speaks for itself.

~FR~

OP.. to me (not any kind of doctor) it sounds borderline OCD.

Yes, I get twitchy over the same stuff,  but I feel no anxiety about it, or compulsion to FIX it.  Just annoyance, which I can easily ignore.

Termy.. according to all my teachers (schooling and life), Popeye is correct in how he typed 'a lot'.  lefties should have been Lefties.

See, here is a perfect example of hypocricy. The whole thread has been about trying to communicate clearly, and then some moronic redneck asshole comes along and tries to turn the discussion into a red vs blue contest.

What in the fuck is wrong with you? People are posting on this thread trying (at least, this is how I see things) to find common ground, and then some moronic dildo tries to interject his moronic same-old partisan horseshit red-blue bullshit in a feeble (seriously feeble) weak at the knees effort to sew more discord.

You are a disgusting sorry excuse for an American.

i feel the same way, when someone states in their profile that they are a "Dominate" instead of a "Dominant" it makes me feel like my head is about to explode.

i think it affects me more because i love words and language and sometimes the sheer laziness of people reducing statements to a series of letters completely baffles me. my friend recently sent me a text with all sorts of "text talk" (or whatever it's called) that i had to call her and ask her to translate it for me. i don't know if i should be proud of that or embarrassed.

Same here.

You must have missed the post where someone corrected the terminology, saying that the poster who had written didn't have the ability to be a verb or adverb.  The person following that comment decided that he had to say his piece that 'it's not another person's decision'.  I sincerely felt like asking if the guy could prove he was an adverb.   Arrrggghhhh.

Somebody just started a new post about how he's a "dominate".  Now, how in the world am I really supposed to take that seriously?
