quote:

According to renowned philosopher Slavoj Zizek the capitalist system is pushing us all towards an apocalyptic doomsday. He points to the faltering economy, global warming and deteriorating ethnic relations as evidence.

What do you think? Is Liberal Democracy and the Free Market the solution to every problem we face? Or is it the cause of every problem we face? Is Capitalism without democracy the next stage in the evolution of the Free Market?

thats the delusion isnt it?

democracy while it serves a purpose is the great evil....

How dastardly right?

Well in a democracy 501 people can vote and remove the rights of 500 people.

In a republic we each have our rights individually not by permission of the mob 501 mob.

No one seems capable of wrapping their minds around that and its really not that difficult.

One would be a fool to desire democracy over republic.

Hey Popeye, love the new "one term".

I see you're demonstrating your non-partisan, moderate, independence yet again.

Real One - One would be a fool to desire democracy over republic.
Actually RO I think people have pretty much proven that it is just the opposite. The majority of people do not want freedom they want safety and security (just look at all the subs and slaves here for an example) and the majority rule means that more people feel secure. (I believe the constitution basically says at one point that people will suffer as long as they can tolerate it rather than change what they are used to.)

As Gerry Spence says - We Have Become The New American Slaves! Our cages are gilded and our chains are golden but we are still slaves.

The problem in America is not the idea of democracy versus republic but rather that we have to many SHEEP who would rather be cared for than stand on their own. The slaves now outnumber the free by massive numbers and will continue to vote for things that promote their protection versus their freedom.

OP - If it was not capitalism then it would be something else. Doms have always looked for ways to become top Doms even if it means killing a few million people and destroying part of the world. It has happened all through history. Capitalism is just a less bloody way of fighting for dominance. (It does not scare the subbies as much as say blowing a few hundred people up.)
When capitalism fail we turn to war.
I suppose you could try to solve the worlds problems by killing all of the Doms. The only problem with that is that we fight back!!!

Moonhead -> RE: Are we living in the end times? (11/29/2010 3:15:24 PM)

Yes, but not all at the same time with most of the human race being cast into the pit of eternal burny hellfire.
You're supposed to get signs and portents before the end times get going, dig? The beast with seven heads, the lady of easy virtue riding something tattooed with names offensive to God, false prophets, the fall of Jerusalem, like that. I think some of that crap might make the news if it was happening...

pahunkboy -> RE: Are we living in the end times? (11/29/2010 3:42:07 PM)

Yeah- Moon, go back to sleep.

We are not at war with Oceana.

LOL

Fellow -> RE: Are we living in the end times? (11/29/2010 3:56:23 PM)

There is a probability we will blow ourselves up in form of WW3. It would be "End Times", sort of. At least end of the World as we know it. What the professor is talking about are just sharp changes in the society because of the economic and social ideology factors. The economists have known long time that the increasing prosperity in capitalist economy is not sustainable. I remember discussing the economy situation with my friend  (who has doctorate in global ecology) about 15 years ago. We then reached the conclusion: it is as good as it can get, it will not get better and we will  face a gradual worsening. We were probably correct then. I have seen the argument that in order to have sustainable prosperity and the jobs growth in capitalist economy the annual growth rate needs to be at least 3%. Nothing can grow forever. The professor seems to advocate undemocratic World Government system that would fix the problems. He indicates Obama treated BP disaster as an ordinary accident ignoring the underlying much wider problems. Obama does not have power to do anything about it. In his niche keeping BP stock price up has much higher priority.  So, I would call it "living in the end of GOOD TIMES".

Bingo.

Maybe even the Great Tribulation.

Weather it is 10 years, 30 years.... SOMETHING is coming.

Yeah, but if the rest of 'em aren't any smarter than you, I like our chances. That was one of the stupidest posts in the history of the internet. Do you really believe that  shit, or are you just trying to see who'll rise to the bait?

I skimmed it- and it went out the other ear.   A few words in it were correct- but the additional words in it-  made my head ache, my ears ring, and now I have to buy a new computer chair!!!!

Termyn8or -> RE: Are we living in the end times? (11/29/2010 6:36:02 PM)

"Real One - One would be a fool to desire democracy over republic.
Actually RO I think people have pretty much proven that it is just the opposite. "

Or have they just proven that they are fools ?

The crafting of this government was, by intent, to allow as much freedom as possible. Complete freedom is not possible, eveyone knows it. So unfortunately there will be a compromise.

So there is a proverbial line drawn in the sand. The main problem is that it keeps moving in one direction. We compromise, they take. We compromise more they take more. The ones who are aggressive in that manner gravitate towards positions of power, such as in government or big business.

The founders knew that greed and lust for power was practically universal. That is the true reason the second amendment exists, because they could see that it just might be needed. Time comes sooner or later. The problem not is that those words on that hemp lack any real teeth. The teeth are in those who respect the spirit of those words. Today people seem to prefer to wipe their ass with Our paper.

Even without something like the second amendment, revolutions have been going on forever. Jefferson said it would be good to have one every twenty years or so.

Times comes.

In about 4 Billion years, the sun will run out of Hydrogen fuel and begin another phase of its existence by swelling up to incinerate the earth and becoming a red giant. Life on earth will, of course, be impossible.

The Republicans will blame Obama.
