Nineveh -> RE: gettin ready to pack it up (12/1/2010 5:56:34 PM)

From what I have heard, including from a F2M friend who lives there Colorado is the best state to be Trans in.

LanceHughes -> RE: gettin ready to pack it up (12/1/2010 6:33:16 PM)

Absolutely true!  And there's good reason.  The VERY first MtF re-assignments were done in Pueblo (about 3-4 hours south of Denver)  BRB with links and such.....

Well, got that slightly wrong.... It's Trinidad, Colorado.  Here's a noted physician's wiki entry: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marci_Bowers

Ah..., here's what I was looking for... the FIRST ever surgery was by:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stanley_Biber in Trinidad - check for the documentary by the same name.

Now, mind you, that doesn't mean the state as a whole is Trans-gender friendly.  On the other hand, Denver itself (as opposed to rural Colorado) is heavily liberal and has a great, brand-new GLBT center.  I know there are transgendered BDSMers here.  (I've been approached a couple of times, that's how.... LOL!)

All in all - Colorado is great - consistently in "Best places to live" lists.  Plenty of outdoor activities balanced with excellent cultural, artistic and historic facilities.  And, best of all, cost of living isn't anywhere as bad as either Coast.

/Oh, alright. DarkSteven.... I know we Coloradians are NOT supposed to encourage others to move here..... but, but.... I just had to brag on my adopted home state./

DarkSteven -> RE: gettin ready to pack it up (12/1/2010 7:05:48 PM)

Agree with Lance.  I'll add that Trinidad is located in rural southern Colorado.  The operations themselves, and the caring for transgenders while they recover, is pretty much the major industry in Trinidad - it's not a metropolitan area.

I've met two MtFs at Denver-area events.  I dunno how common they are in other states.

LadyHibiscus -> RE: gettin ready to pack it up (12/1/2010 8:06:22 PM)

I know many transgender folk here in SE Michigan...but I agree with moving to Colorado!

OttersSwim -> RE: gettin ready to pack it up (12/1/2010 9:07:35 PM)

Colorado has an anti-discrimination law that protects trans-folk in situations of employment and housing and public access.  People are people even in Colorado and it is not always safe and not always accepting.  That said, I have been out presenting and open at some pretty large events like the Denver Rock and Roll Marathon surrounded by thousands of people and had pretty universal acceptance - and I don't completely pass.  As Lance said, there is an active LGBT community in Denver and a sort of trans-mecca in Trinidad.

Plus there are 53 14,000 foot peaks, clean(er) air, and wide open spaces with beauty most everywhere.  It is a great place to live!  :)

Dear Burnt;  Thanks for reminding me of the NUMBER ONE, most important reason to move to Colorado.... friendly folks (in general.)  Not like stuck-up, selfish, entrched, in-bred folks of..... sorry....

Anyway, come for a visit.  You might decide you'd like to stay.

This shot is about 30-40 mintes away from the State Capitol Building:

this is a test - FAIL

Nicer - less blue - shot of same scene.
BLUE = too much light, or is it not enuf?

LanceHughes -> RE: gettin ready to pack it up (12/2/2010 3:29:38 PM)

This time for sure !

Yeah, yeah... this time a fail, for shure.

BUT!  That's just a sample of what to expect around Denver.  As DS reminds us, Trinidad is in southern Colorado and is very rural.

Here's the Chamber of Commerce page: http://www.trinidadco.com worth a read!  At least take a look for some very nice pics.

That site claims 3 hour drive to Denver - I'd put 4, but HEY! it's the Chamber of Commerce. LOL!

Did find this as sort of a generic shot for front range views from I-25:

hausboy -> RE: gettin ready to pack it up (12/3/2010 3:11:42 PM)

I've lived in two other places that you might want to consider that were extremely trans-friendly.

San Fran:  There was very easy access to trans healthcare, therapists and tons and tons of TG/TS resources, not to mention so many transfolk that it was truly a mundane thing to most.  In fact, at the place where I worked, whenever anyone had a hoarse voice, the question was usually "Do you have a cold or have you started hormones?'   The down side of course--with so much trans visibility, it could actually be harder for many to pass.  The other harsh reality of living in San Francisco: very expensive.  More pluses?  They have extensive anti-discrimination laws AND city employees' insurance covers hormones and SRS.

Albuquerque:  I was actually shocked when I moved to New Mexico--I was expecting very close-minded, backwards folks, and instead, found a very accepting, openly gay community and a regularly meeting trans group (both men and women) that was very active, social and pleasant to attend.  The State passed anti-discrimination laws a few years ago (including trans) AND surprise, surprise, it was just a short drive away from Trinidad, CO.

Most major metropolitan cities in the United States (I've traveled all over the country and lived in several different major cities) have transgroups that meet regularly.
Personally, select a city that meets your overall needs--transportation, cost of living, employment, housing, climate as well as lifestyle and pace.  Trans community is fine and dandy, but take it from someone who has started new in cities several times over--there are a lot of factors that can make or break your successful adjustment to a new city.  It's great to have friends and community, but if the job, environment, and overall feel of the city doesn't suit you, you'll find yourself surveying a map in no time.

Good luck with your move and your transition

MrKicia -> RE: gettin ready to pack it up (12/3/2010 9:08:09 PM)

I WOULDN'T move to South Carolina.  Much of my family lives in Colorado, none trans (that im aware of).  Colorado is beautiful, at least the parts that ive seen.  I just cant handle snow, and walking up stairs and running proved very difficult for me at the higher altitude.

BTW my grandparents live in Meeker, and my great grand mother (who turned 100 this year) lives in Austin.  I have extended family that are scattered about west, northwest Colorado and eastern Utah.

auditguy -> RE: gettin ready to pack it up (12/4/2010 9:34:59 AM)

Let us not forget the best argument for Colorado: South Park.

DommeKeliDallas -> RE: gettin ready to pack it up (12/6/2010 4:29:36 PM)

Bible belt southern states are not as open.
