Is it bad for me? Of course it is. Moving on...

I've very recently taken up smoking a pipe (if anyone really wants to know why they can message me on the other side). I have a Nording as my second, my first being a little clay and straw pipe that I mostly used as a prop while during historical reenacting. I'm lucky to have a really nice tobacco shop in my city but I'm just curious what sorts of pipes and tobacco people here on the forums enjoy and would suggest. For the moment I'm going for mild and aromatic.

Also, if there are any suggestion on types of lighters that would make it easier to light the pipe while standing outside in the wind, that would be nice. I like not burning my hands...

This isn't worth another thread, it is almost the same question. Just what makes a good pipe ? I don't mean a pot pipe, I mean a tobacco pipe. While it is not my preference to smoke tobacco out of a pipe, I smoke pipe tobacco. I have a couple of those cigarette making machines and save thousands of bucks a year. These are the sit on the table good kind, not the cheap ones. I am not the only one who does this.

Some people are poor and have to if they want to smoke, but some found a brand of pipe tobacco is good. It is very good, in fact better than most brands of store boughten cigarettes. And it does not taste different, it doesn't taste as though you're smoking a portable, disposable pipe. It tastes just like a cigarette.

What is it about these pipes that make them smell so different, the wood ? Is it a certain type of wood that makes a good pipe ? It seems that metal or glass would not be appropriate [for tobacco]. Does the wood in a way "spice" the tobacco ?

In a way this is a similar question, if you consider it a hijack just tell me to STFU.

........ In fact didn't I hear something about corncob pipes a long time ago ? What about that ?

T

I really don't know what makes a good pipe. Mine is wood and I really like how it handles - I suppose that is the best term for it. My little clay pipe I'm not so fond of. A nicer clay pipe might do differently though.

I used to have a lighter that looked like a bic, but had a shield that slid up and blocked the flame from wind. It was years ago, so I can't say where I got it, but I have seen similar ones in our local smoke shop.

I have never smoked a pipe but my dad did. He always used a match and circled the flame whilst taking a puff of the pipe. Then he would allow the tobacco to die back and go out. This was something to do with burning off the moisture. He would then re-light it properly.

Growing up, my dad used to smoke a pipe. Clay i believe. I used to shop and buy him a pipe for christmas... this was when kids could still buy such presents for their parents. He smoked this tobacco that had an apple aroma... man.. such memories!

Wow, that brought back memories. My Dad and Grandfather both smoked pipes (The Irish-whatcha gonna do?) and they did pretty much the same. Matter of fact, I remember a pretty complex ritual involving proper tamping, a few different lights, lots of puffing, then aromatic smoke filling the room.

Although they probably won't work for historical re-enactment, there are butane lighters specifically made for pipe smoking that emit a lower heat flame at an angel or with hoods on them to guard against the wind.
For re-enactment, i bet there's open flame around somewhere, instead of shorter matches, light a longer bit of wood, like a puck for lighting fireworks--keep in mind you don't actually want a high heat flame near yer' tabacci'.

Different pipe woods do impart different flavors to the smoke.  Briar's good as it also absorbs moisture--it might even be what you have. After a while, heavy smoking or long use, the pipe might become a bit odorous, that's what boxes are for and that's why some people prefer Meecham, those white ones that turn tan with use--the pipe continues to have a more pleasant smell for some reason.
Your clay pipe, if it's a cheap-o is commonly considered a poor choice as it does impart a slightly unpleasant taste.  i had a friend who used this as a bar of when to ease up on their habit--if he wasn't slightly bothered by it, it meant he was losing some ability to taste his food.  He consciously chose gluttony as his sin though, so that's probably irrelevant. :) For similar reasons, i'm not partial to soapstone, i think the flavor it adds is unpleasant but other people don't find it noteworthy.

i certainly recommend corncob to anyone who wants to try it, i think it adds a note of straw-like flavor, not at all in a bad way. i'd liken it to some teas that have a straw note in them.  That, and i like the symbolism of them; i'm silly that way. *cue Ol' timey music like you'd hear in Oh Brother, Where Art Thou?*
