I do believe a good deal of his maladies were more a result of injuries sustained during his ejection.....as one might imagine ejecting from a jet can be,and often is in fact rather dangerous.....and the authorities of North VietNam were not all that interested in seeing that these men got timely and effective medical care(despite the single payer option that was ,at the time, available under the Communist regime).
