I have recently gathered together enough cash to buy a Wii system. I thought it was going to be easy - just go to the shop and buy a Wii. Simple, right? Wrong!

After a rather tense exchange of opinions between me and a baby-faced salesman who was clearly going for his 'highest sales of the week' badge, I left, empty-handed.

So I'm turning to you geeky lot for help :)

I want a Wii primarily for the fitness stuff. I want to do aerobics, pilates and/or yoga, and tai chi (if they have it). The salesman swore blind that I should pre-order a Wii "black" (if that makes sense) that is released sometime in the next few days in the UK, rather than buy one of the Wii systems he had on the shelf.

I'm also not sure what attachments to buy to go with it. There's a lot to choose from, and I'm feeling a bit bewildered and VERY forty-something

My questions are:

1. Will I gain a better system for what I want if I buy the new black thingie as opposed to the current thingy?

2. For all those who use any kind of Wii fitness programme, which ones do you find best for general health/fitness?

3. Are there any peripherals that are essential to work alongside the fitness programmes, and are there any to avoid?

Thanks everyone!

Go to a pawn shop, buy a used wii...you want the wii fit game for starters (you should be able to get that used) and the step aerobics board.

Save the money on the new shit, since you are old enough to take care of shit.

Those things are damn near indestructable.

very interested in the responses, as we are getting the LoudOne one for the fishing games, and the fitness ones for his aging mother.

How old is loud one?  because you might be better off to go ps3 with that one, or the xbox connect.

he is four and will have to set it up and install it himself, as his mother is a techno-dolt and his dad is running a close second.

We got a Wii as the family x-mas present last year, and we all love it.

If you want it for the fitness aspect mainly, start out with the Wii Fit software and the Wii Fit Balance Board. You should be able to get a package deal. That will have you set for a good while and the whole thing is really fun, the motivational factor quite high.

The Board also offers some fun games for the kids, but what brings them all together is Mario Cart, and Mario Party.
Buy 3 controllers from the get go Holly, and be prepared to spend the holidays with Jim and the LO in front of the thing. I got a lot of entertainment out of watching a middle aged man "secretly" train in the evenings, just to get the jumps and swings down good enough to be able to compete with the boys at Zelda.
As for the attachments (the steering wheels are nearly a must have), you can go with the cheap generic stuff on that, they fulfill their job pretty good and come relatively cheap.

The bolded section. My son got me one last year for Christmas. I love, love, LOVE it! Even though I haven't lost much weight( I love potato chips more than the Wii), I am ALOT more fit and toned than I was a year ago. We recently hooked it up to the internet and now watch netflix movies on it as well!

Like Ron said... try a local pawn shop first, to try to save a few bucks. Once you hit the forty something stage, new and "improved" isn't necessarily so.

Oh, and Ron? While I agree that the PS3 is a better choice once they get old enough for serious gaming, I don't think you can beat the Wii in the family fun department.

Two different systems for different applications and consumer groups.

Oldest will get the PS3 for his 11 birthday this month, and it will reside in his room, where he can hang out and play alone or with his friends. The Wii sits in the living room, and is mostly used as a group activity.

Hey, I am being overruled by my gamer guy here at the shop, his name is Tomm and everything after the colon is his (he knows what hes talking about):

the konnect for xbox does everything thru a hd camera so you wont have alot of accessories to mess with. it well help with the aerobics and polates. And it will play DVDs as well as netflix so you can get your Tai Chi in that way.

the wii fit plus(get the plus if u go with wii) measures BMI, balance, posture, and weight and rates you accordingly. you' be able to set goals and moniter ur progress. it also logs the calories u burn for each exercise.

ps3 has the move and it is similar to the wii no balance board tho. it appears to be geared more toward interactive gaming(such as fighting, shooting). males 10 to 35.

i have the wii fit and board. it is great for working out and also family time. we regularly get together as a fam and break up the more serious routines with fun excercises. it is also the best deal(cheapest)

my x box 360 and ps3 are used strictly for playing killing games online with buddies. i do however see value in the xbox konnect. it puts u in the picture so u can match urself with the trainer. it is spendy tho. each system has pros and cons. i hope this has been helpful.

:::::
Me again.  This is the US I don't know, but I should think prices are the same across the pond generally, there is a new Wii coming out, but it is gonna be about the same as the current one, except spendier.............not gonna have any particular bells and whistles you need.

If you have more questions cmail and I will try have Tomm answer them.

Calamity Sandra---- agreed now, since I thought that LoudOne was older than Hollys meatloaf when I wrote it.

Rons gamer guy is right about the Fit Plus. I forgot to mention that what we have is the Plus.

Oh, and Holly? Be prepared to be called "unbalanced" by the darn thing.

I suspect that Holly should get the Loooooooooooooooooooong cord for the balance board so she gets an accurate graph and readout when she falls down the stairs with it.

I think the black wii is exactly the same as the white one. The reason your man might have recommended you wait is because the black one comes in a bundle - all the extra stuff in the box. AFAIK, the black wii will have more goodies in the box for the same price as the white bundle.

Personally, I'd stick with the wii. The games are more 'fun'.

thanks everyone for your input! I shall now do some serious price-checking and go in prepared to haggle (it always freaks out the sales guys, but usually works).

One more question though - if Holly is getting a balance board (or anything that involves her standing upright and moving), does the Wii come with a crash mat and a medical emergency training program?

The Wii Fit instructers do fuss at you if you start doing things too quickly... but I don't think they can call for help!

I would recommend the Wii Fit Plus if you go with the Wii. As far as I can tell, it has everything the Wii Fit has, but more.

Personally, I haven't used the Wii Fit/Wii Fit Plus that much because it focuses more on balance-related exercises and yoga than I was interested in (which makes sense, since a big purpose of the game is to utilize the balance board). I would also like it better if there were more degrees of difficulty for some of the aerobic exercises. But it has a good selection of activities, the controls work well, and it's a great way to get into using the Wii for fitness.

My favorite fitness-related game is "Gold's Gym Cardio Workout." It's more limited than Wii Fit -- it really only has boxing. The few other exercises are just an add-on. But I like it for aerobics and I like that there's a progression of difficulty. I can do lighter routines for warm-ups and on days when I don't have it in me for something heavier, and the more advanced levels are a genuine challenge for me (I'm speaking as someone who isn't in terrible shape, but who's overweight and could be a lot fitter than I am).

The only bad experience I've had with a fitness game so far is "Jillian Michaels Fitness Ultimatum 2009."  The controls were too frustrating for me. I have no idea if the 2010 version is an improvement.

The  nice thing about the Wii is that a lot of the non-fitness games get you moving, too.

For accessories, you'd want to balance board (it's used for the Wii fit and a lot of other fitness games), at least one or two remotes (depending on if you want to be able to play with other people or play games that can use more than one remote), and a nunchuck. I also got "skins" for the remote and the balance board. So far, I haven't needed anything else, though I'm not a very serious gamer on the Wii.
