Liberalism: An Autopsy

In the tumultuous history of postwar American liberalism, there has been a slow but steady decline of which liberals have been steadfastly oblivious. The heirs of the New Deal are down to around 20% of the electorate, according to recent Gallup polls. Conservatives account for 42% of the vote, and in the recent election the independents, the second most numerous group at 29% of the electorate, broke the conservatives' way.

These pundits do like their premature obituaries, don't they?

I just think the liberals are very, very, sick.

I believe liberalism rises in times of affluence and conservatism rises in times of economic hardship and political strife.

I believe with a little thought the reasons are obvious.

I grew up on the south side of Chicago, in the 11th Ward...Richie Daley's sister was my teacher for years. I understand exactly what you're talking about.

I didn't even know what a pot hole was until I started driving, and leaving the neighborhood.

The sad thing is people will buy into this stuff.

The fact is that for the past 60 years there has been relentless propoganda attacking liberalism in the US. We've been equated with communists and portrayed as traitorous. It's gotten to the point that people who really are liberal avoid the word.

But reality is still reality. Liberalism has won and all the conservatives can do is pursue a holding action and nibble at the edges of liberal accomplishments. We'll see it again in the coming 2 years. There wil be no repeal of HCR, Social Security won't be privatized much less ended, the Department of Education wil not be eliminated, neither will the EPA, the minimum wage won't be reduced or eliminated, etc.

The sad thing is liberals can't handle the truth....that's why they avoid the word. Remember Hillary Clinton during the 2008 Democratic primary adamently refuting that she is a liberal and just as adamently professing she is a progressive. 60 years ago progressives were adamently refuting that they were progressives and just as adamently professing to be liberals. If it wasn't so sad it would be funny as hell.

I mean historically, rob.

Look at some of the great people in history and what they were considered to be by the rulers of the time.

Jesus. Liberal according to the existing hebrew religious hierarchy.

Washington and the rest of the founding fathers. LIBERALS according to King George.

Lincoln. A damn liberal.

Dozens of examples.

Conservatives want status quo. Liberals tend to be more for social change.

We consider Jesus, Washington and Lincoln now to be very conservative, but in their day, they were vilified by the establishment as liberals.

Stop the knee jerk reaction and think for once instead of regurgitating the pablum that you have been fed by the media.

In 1975, Time magazine had a cover story called "Can the Republican Party Survive?" It put forward the idea that with the election of Jimmy Carter, the Republicans were finished, washed up.

In the early 2000's Karl Rove went around talking about a "permanent republican majority";

Um, history had other ideas.

These same sort of premature funerals have been held regularly every single election by pundits and commenters who are bored and unable to think of an original column idea.

Popeye, every time from now on when you try your bullshit about being a moderate Independent this quote gets thrown back in your face.

So, you define everyone who doesn't like the Democratic Party as therefore a Conservative Republican?

Every heard of the fallacy of the excluded middle?

Your twisted thinking has always been apparent, rml, but this time it is utterly clear that you wish to place people in neat niches in your head, by your own definitions, rather than by their own actual words and actions.

Hmmmmmmmmm...........................let's see.

"Now I fucking HATE Democrats! Scum of the earth, sneaky, lying, half truths, want to "save the world, ALWAYS with someone ELSE'S money of course."

Yeah, I can see what you mean.

I definitely want to put people in niches and not judge them by their words.
