They're brown an they stink. I was hoping to save some and plant them for next year an then roast the rest, now I'll either have to throw them out, or try to seperate the discolored ones from the good ones* sighs* I really was looking forward to these seeds, cause the last batch I had around halloween got burnt in the overn.

I have 1 more big pumpkin and 3 4- small sugar pumpkins I guess I could just gut those this week an start over with the seeds,  and roast them right away.

should pop them in the freezer and try to grow them anyway, the outershell going moldy might just be the perfect compost

Yeah, I thought about that, I thought freezing em would maybe kill the part that grows. Maybe not, I'll have to try it, I don't have anything to loose.

Don't bother to try and use them for new plants. They won't breed true.

by the way, these seeds came right out of the live pumpkin, they're not store bought or nothing,I gutted the pumpkins specifically fresh for thanksgiving for various uses, one as a center piece and 5 as soup bowls, and then put the seeds to the side. and in the past all my dad had to do to get some to grow, and granted he wasn't trying, they just did, was throw them in the dirt in the garden * this works with other seeds like sqush seeds, or seeds from say pea's that scattered and migrated in the garden*an they started growing a plant in the nature of the seed.

Cucurbits, which the pumpkin family belongs to, are notorious sluts.  They will interbreed with any others, so that is what DesFIP meant when she said they will not breed true.  The offspring could have any characteristics.

I suspect that you did not wash the seeds, and that they had the stringy pumpkin innards attached, and that is what went bad.

If they went bad, they will not germinate, period.  But as I said, I suspect that you didn't clean the seeds, and that the seeds will be fine once you wash them.  Either that or you stored them in an extremely humid place.  Seeds are designed by nature for staying unrotted for extended periods of time out in the open (years).

Hehe, love your notorious sluts comment.

I don't care what charastics they have, just as long as I can carve them an eat their seeds. It's why I want to grow my own, so that pumpkin patches and what not are out of the picture, sure I'd go if I wanna go see the goats or the candy store or something, but , when it comes down to it, if you want more than one pumpkin, and you want it to be fairly large, not huge but not small either, you're gonna get wallet gouged, One pumpkin alone was 4 bucks, Walmart wanted 3 bucks a piece for them, and some of them were pretty scared an messed up,  an the best deal I found with out a bunch of bargain hunting was 2 for 6 dollars at Raleys.

Well, they got rained on actually:( When I was done cutting the pumpkin an we needed someplace to put them, we put a towl in the bottom of a can an put them in there,  and then they got put outside on a table an forgotten about, so yeah, it was improper storing, to begin with, an then they sat an got rained on twice and then I forgot them for a day or two, sitting there in their can all pressed in on each other, with a wet paper towel..*ashamed face at my seed negligence*

I washed them all off, an they still stink somewhat, and the seeds themselves are brown and awfull looking, not the slop on them, they were relativly slop free when they went into the cans. so they're probably trashed.

I thought they were sugar pumpkins, which is why I said they won't breed true. If they're from homegrown pumpkins, and you don't care that the flesh won't be good tasting, that's different. They may not be perfectly shaped, but for carving, that won't matter.

Most modern seeds will not produce exact copies of the parent plant. They're designed that way so that people have to go back to the seed companies every year. To get a hybrid plant, you have to mate two parent plants of different characteristics together in order to get what you want in an offspring.

For example, if you have a pink flower and plant its seeds, expect the next flower to be red or white, not pink. You have to buy the seeds produced by a white flower pollinated by a red one to get another pink one.

Well some of them were sugar pumpkins too, but I was only interested in the size not the fact they were sugar pumpkins hehehe. I thought maybe a small type variety would grow other small type varieties.
